Acid Rain Impact- Western Adirondack Stream Survey Released

Acid Rain Impact- Western Adirondack Stream Survey Released
by Alex

Results From 2002-2005 Western Adirondack Stream Survey have been released by the New York State Energy Research and Devolpment Authority(NYSERDA).  200 headwater streams were sampled for this survey, and of them, that two thirds have been harmed by acid rain, i.e., about 450 miles of acidified streams.

According to the NYDEC, streams are more acidic than lakes because of the water they receive from shallow rivulets, which often cannot neutralize acids. Also, streams cannot dilute periodic acid deposits with less-acidic water the way that lakes can. Streams also are more directly affected than lakes by nearby vegetation and soil processes.
