Where's the camera
This is a short story by Dave about him and his son fishing Rapid Creek.A short story, My son and I have fished on Rapid Creek all day with little sucess, I like to blame it on the weather. the sky was clear and the temperature was in the low 90's. We threw every fly in my fly box but was not able to convence even the smallest trout these flies were a wounderful meal. I could see by now my son was growing a little board from the lack of action so I decided we should hike up stream to the dam. I Thought maybe the deeper water would be a better bet. As we approached the pool below the Pactola dam I could see fish coming to the surface. A smile came across our face . Our luck was changing. The hike in the hot sun might be worht it after all. We worked our way down the bank and on my sons first cast a splash and a bend in the rod . Oh but how breif this excitement was to last because with one long run the line went slack. Oh the disappointment in his face of the fish that got away. I chuckeld and moved closer to the water and made a hike up on to some bolders to get a bettter look into the pond. The water was crystal clear. I could see some nice browns working in the vegetation. they were pretty deep but were easly spooked. So I decided to hike to the other side of the pond. As I got closier I could see a nice rainbow shoot away from my shadow in the water. Holly crap he was a nice one. Well I got a little lower to the bank so my shadow would be less likely to scare anymore fish away. I could see a nice fish coming right at me I wasnt sure what it was at first but i knew I had a chance at it. I stripped some line of my rod and made a nice short cast in front of him. He came to the surface got to with inches of my fly and shot back down to the depths of the pond. Darn that was close . So I decided to change to a small nynph and see if I could find another fish along the bank. As I walked along I froze in my steps a large shadow close to the bank. I got close to the ground and cast ever so softly. The nymph hit the water with a lillte thump and splash. The fish turned made a quick dash for my fly and turned just as all the others had done, but to my surprise he came back like a rocket hit my fly . I lifted my rod and set the hook. The battle was on . My boy came running over to help me net the fish. After several nice little runs I was able to swing the fish into his awaiting net . He let out a nice yell . Hes heavy and hes huge. To my admazement he was a brookie a nice fat long Brook Trout . I got down on my knees and took out my tape and measured him . Wow a nice 19 1/2 inches long . Now for my disappointment I reached in my vest for the camera. My heart sank as I relized where my camera was . Yup about 3 miles down stream in my truck on the front seat. Oh well I guess I slid the beautiful speck back into the water and gave the fish a big thanks for a battle well done. On that day I made a promise to myself and my son we will never be without a camera again.
