May I politely suggest that you trim the belly of the deer hair bug closer to the hook shank.
That will open up the gape more and give you a better chance for the barb to penetrate.

I thought that would be the case. I learned that I need a new and very sharp pair of scissors as I was attempting to trim that hair.

When you buy a new pair of scissors...Use thjem only for hair and feathers....
NOT paper or tinsil.....Curved or straight scissors is up to the tyer....Mike uses curved,
I use straight....Maybe that is why his bugs look better than mine. 
I was trying out some new patterns today. I tied two new flies to me this morning attempting a ghost like streamer withthe materials I had on hand and I wanted to spin some deer hair and here is what I ended up with.
I know they aren't real pretty but I can polish and hone the technique when I get the nuts and bolts down.
I suspect the deer hair salmon fly pattern I was trying to replicate is still too bushy and the hackle I used is too big and probably not the appropriate color, but I'm sure a bass would suck it up anyway.
The ghost like streamer pattern looks like I crowded it with too much material in my opinion. maybe a longer hook would have been a good idea. I used some mallard feathers for shoulders and did not bother with cheeks. After all who can afford jungle cock these days!?
