The older generation LOL, up near my old place used to fish for only pickerel during the winter , they used to make chowda out of it, they told me. They claim winter time pickerel are the only ones for some reason, they feel the cold water make the meat taste better ? and not as milky i guess.

Ziggy, also less chance of the fish being wormy, same thing with Black Bass. I am sure the colder water has a lot to do with the taste as well.

My grandfather used to say the same thing. Cusk was another fish the old timers from Maine would go nutty for in a chowder.

You know Paul I have never fished for cusk, but I would guess that they are good because a lot of people fish for them. Like Hornpout, not much to look at but I here they are great eating.

Lee,
Poor mans lobster is what the older timers would call them. I haven't fish for them either or ever eaten one. Someone told me once you need to fish at night and crazy deep to effectively target them. I like ice fishing but I'm not sure I want to be on the ice in the dark. A lot colder after the sun goes down.
Ziggy don't forget we have a date to pull some fish through the the ice. I am very anxious to give it a shot. Any chance you'll be going to work between now and March?
It seems that I have inherited some weekend shifts due to an unexpected surgery of a co-worker. This means since the organization has killed overtime that I will have to take days off during the week when my Saturday shift comes around. So how better to spend a day I'd otherwise have nothing to do with than fishing with the Z-man?!

Well even with the storm we made it out yesterday and figured we would try a local place for trout spent 5 hours no Trout but we did land few pickerel and nice fat perch . Today we left early 4:30 early and headed north for some pike we met up with a guy trying for a fishing quest to catch ever species and eat them we tried to get him a keeper pike he did get one just 3" short oh well had a hell of a day weather was weird but ok.....
Stay tuned ... as it continues couple trout trips and pan fish trip overnight soon, perhaps stick out the good old cusk traps and try our luck at that...
Umm.. Sounds good. I love fish chowder but I've never eaten a pic. I've too been scarred of all the bones.
