Got a picture of one, not on a hole and one on a hole. Sounds like a good idea if you can remove the cover after a flag goes up. If you can't remove the cover easily then they may be more trouble then they are worth.

heard of them seen them but never tried them. i go after trout mostly and when they hit time is of the essance . to me delays time to get to the line which could mean losing a fish , i like the idea but just seems like too much trouble for whats it worth i like to check my traps every 30 min or so and make sure bait is good this usually helps keep the holes open . i haven't seen a diffrence with the light topic but some claim it makes a diffrence some will only use 6" auger due to this i have always had 10" and always catch something .

'm constently checking bait so freezing holes isn't a big deal for me as well. Guys have been cutting holes and catching fish this way for a loooonnnnnggg time. So it works. After re-thinking this it seems like they would be more of a pain to deal with than an asset. I have enough junk to haul in a sled. 
Maybe next year I'll think about trying some.

Paul I have never used one either but have seen it on TV Al Linder In Fisherman or something. I have seen the polar tip up that have the round base again I have never used one. Just like I have never used the wind tip up that polar makes. Folks swear by them . I to used to go out about a 30 mins or so . Depending on temps. Mainly yo check bait or adjust depth. At that time I would use my ladle to remove the ice . As far as the size of the hole I have seen folks use a 10 inch bit down to a 6 inch. I really don't think the fish care about the size but who knows I'm not a fish.

carva congrats on the status, and my thought exactly if i ain't broke why mess with it (hole covers) .... not to mention biggest reason, i have way too much stuff as it is LOL just more stuff to drop on way out 
It is funny how everyone has diffrent look on fishing and all the gadjets they come out with to make people think they have to have them to catch fish, i use basic cheap stuff and have no problems landing the fish i catch,
more so then the equipment , i think its skill and mostly luck even the best skilled people still fail to produce from time to time but having skill makes the chance occur more often Most people fish deep for trout ? hmmm is this the best way? not in my eyes but they do catch them so what do i really know? HA HA i know my way works better usually luck still plays a huge part in my eyes.

For what it's worth, we did some major ice fishing some years back and I needed some more traps. All I could find was some orange flying saucer plastic disk type at Wally. Believe I still have them in one of the trailers.
They were an odd thing when compared to a "regular" trap and I figured it was a waste of time but used them anyway. They did cover the hole, kept the holes from freezing over, especially when the wind was up, and they out produced the standard traps by a wide margin. So much so we let the regular traps alone as we were quite busy with the orange traps.
There is something to it
Anyone use them with tip ups? Grand Lakers to be exact. Non of my friends use them yet. I know the commercial ones are made for tip ups but I can see where you could loose fish. You can't see what's going on with the spool after the flag is tipped because it's underwater below the cover. I do like the concept. Keeps your holes from freezing up and the fish can't see a shaft of light coming down through the water column.
