Well gents I hit the stream today. Took my nephew Riley out to some wild brook trout  water. I will say it had to be one my best day fishing in years. Story on the way. Dave V

Tundra and I hit the Contoocook river this am in Henniker.  Flows were fast and the water was higher than last time we visited a month ago.  Nobody was skunked as we both caught several chub and some were large too.  I was practically certain that I had a trout on but it turned out to be a big chub with a reddish color to it.

Then there were the small mouth.  I believe we both caught a few of these.  I caught three two small one's between 4"-6", and one that was close to 9" or 10."  I'm guessing.

Not too bad for a couple hours of mulling around.  Thanks again for telling us about that spot Zig!  I almost made a run for the New Found this morning, since I was just told that there was some good rainbows to be had up there.  It seems I heard that a few times over the last few weeks which makes me very anxious and I might have to make an early mid week trip to Bristol.

I have high hopes for next weekend's adventure in Alton with Lee.  That is if we are still on.  Otherwise I'll have to run to Bristol instead.

I am not too excited about the end of trout season, but I guess I could focus on some bass fishing by fly over the following few weeks and then focus on tying until trout season returns in the spring, which I am doubly excited for.  Mostly because the way I understand it I missed the early season this year. I was a little too late getting into fly fishing this year.

Ok Gents here is my little story of my fishing trip that turned out to be one of the best day's fishing in my life.

Let me first start off by telling you all how the trip came about. . You see as I have told you before I woke up a sleep giant of a fly fisherman to be.  I go a call on Wedsday and on the end of the line was my new flyifhing partner my nephew Rilely . He was hoping that i would take him fishing this weekend. Who was I to say no to a fly fisherman despirite to hit the water to wet a line.  Especialy a 13 year old. So plans were set for this Saturday . The weather man insured me it was going to be a perfet 72 i couldnt wait .

Well Saturday came I awoke around 6AM I grabbed my gear and headed out to pick up my newly found fishing partner.I stepped out side to heavy fog . I couldnt see the street . So I loaded up everything into the wifes xterra my truck had to sit this one out as it wasnt doing so well. i was hoping the fog would lift as I went out of town well it some what .  Click to view image

So I took out the old cell and made the call. I was going to be a few minutes late . I was worried about taking out a mule deer or something allong the route to the farm house about 20 miles from town.  To my supprise my caution was a good thing . I didnt come across any mule deer in the road .Along side yes but not in the road . I did come aross some anlimals in hooks much bigger then a mule deer.

Now I had to laugh to the start of this fishing trip. I have been slowed down by fog before . Rain , Snow and Wind but cows never. Well i arrived at Riley's house intact and he was eagerly waiting for me. We loaded up his gear and headed back down the road.  I told him where we were going. He had never been Brook Trout fishing and with all the talk of Brookies on Lee's site .It fueled the fire for me to get out there and catch the buggers. In order for us to catch Brook Trout we would have to head to the hills and hike some 2 plus miles to reach that water .  This stream would hold Wild Brook Trout . With it being mid September these trout would be in all its color and glory.

We made it up to Hill City about 8:45.  We stopped at a little market for some home made subs and some drinks for our picnic lunch we would share after our long up hill hike. We then hopped back into the Xterra and headed up into the hills. A very beautiful drive. The sun was starting to show and the temps were warming up.  We came arcoss some buzzards in the road eating a road kill rabbit.  Tnen a few wild turkeys. A few miles to go we came across some nice white tails . Above was an American Bald Eagle.  At last we came to our stop.

We loaded up all the gear . I put on my waders . We were the only fisherman there. An awesome start. We hiked our way down a trail. Should I say up the trail.  As we walked along at about 3/4 of a mile up the hill and trail hoppers were jumping all over the place. I just had a really bad though come over me. I had put my fly box in the veichle but not with my bag . Why because I had tied up some hoppers just in case the hoppers were still active. So a I told Riley I would be right back . I had to go get my box. So he sat down and rested while I took my nearly 51 year old legs back down the trail to fetch the box. I got to the veichle and opened up the door to get my precious box of flies . To my supprise it wasnt there. I then relized at the store I had put the box into my bag. @#%%%. So back up the trail once more. Well now a bit exhausted but eager to get my line and fly wet . I caught up to Riley and we headed back up the trail. After what seamed like a bunch of time went by . We made it.  I said lets head up stream a little way's and eat our lunch. Take a load off  and catch our breath.

So after a good lunch we got our gear and walked down to the water and started studying the stream. I explained to Riley . When you first approach a stream you want to take your time . Study the water.Look for rises . In this case no fish were moving. I didnt see any sing of fish at all. I was really worried . We made a few cast and nothing. Well at this time of day the sun had made itself known. Bright as could be. I told Riley lets go find some shade . We would fish our way down stream working our way back out to our ride as we fished. I was hoping the sun would go in and hide .  It wasnt to long after i mutted these words and things began to change.

The clouds started coming out and the water came to life. I tied on a Renegade I found some pocket water . I explained to Riley how to read pocket water .My cup of tea.  I showed him the little differnces in the way water would shift at a fallen log .. A boulder in the right place. How that would make the water a bit deeper. The foam lines. The pocket at the end of a riffle . I said sit back and watch I showed him a spot I would lay money it would hold trout. I made my cast to the little spot where the water changed color . Just a milkey spot. My Renegade hit its spot. Oh ya why a Renegade when no fish were rising ? I have complete confidence in the fly when it comes to wild brook trout.   That cast a wild brookie I was so excited.

I then told Riley your turn his cast. now right about now I get a camera low battery @%^^^&$$

We went on to catch fish after fish in every pocket we hit. I caught the most beautiful colored male I have ever seen about 10 inches. Orange on the belly like a painter put it there. I say all in all we caught close to 100 fish. All wild and full of color. Them renegades were worn to nothing. What a day. Riley and I went home with stories to tell and tie up some new Renegades
