Okay Stephen I will do that tomorrow.  I doubt they are of any real value, and I have no idea just how old they are or aren't.  But I will put them up inthe morning for ya.

Sounds like the Regal is leading the pack! Yikes $295 at Cabelas!!!

I've been on a rotary for so long I'd be lost without one.

T-Bone

The two most expensive items I have in tieing tools ( outside of the vise ) are both Petitjean. One is a bobbin that you can honestly thread in the dark, and the other is a whip finisher. I heed and hawed for a long spell before I bit for them quite a while ago because anything that man makes is expensive. I'm glad I took the plunge because the quality is superb and the functionality is above reproach.

He also makes a vise  that looks like it should be on the Sci Fi channel to the tune of about $700. I'll be holding off on that one as "frog skins" are slim around here.

I learned a lot from Charlie Poole and one thing he taught me was getting the pressure right on the materials and thread so the fly does not unravel when a trout chews on it. So I understand why he went to the Regal as he could really yard down on the thread with that vise.

So I guess I could be termed a heavy handed tier as well. I've thought about going up to one of the larger Renzettis but the one I'm in love with is $465 clams. Spose I could justify it if I was going to sell flies in the store but I don't want a job on the bench these days.

Sure is Koda.  But the price makes parts of my anatomy pucker up.    That's why I am sticking to old vise. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles but it gets the job done for the flies I tie Maybe some day when I get onto Salmon flies or large streamers. I guess if it were my livelihood and I had to crank out a thousand flies a day it would really come in handy.  Your right though sure is nice looking eye candy Dave V

At the old American Angling in Salem, NH now closed I met a guy that tied a salmon fly without a vise. His wife was with him and confirmed that he didn't own a vise. All I could think was when I saw it that I couldn't tie that nice of a fly with a vise. The Regal was a retirement gift to myself and used the money from the sale of the Renzetti to justify it to myself. I like the rotary part of it and the jaws do a great job of holding even a small hook. Try before you buy. There are so many different kinds and everyone has their own views of them.

Good advice Bill! It would indeed be a dull world if we all liked the same thing and all thought alike. What works for one may not for another.

Besides, it makes for some nice conversation to compare notes on gear and other fly fishing stuff.

Stephen,

As promised here is a picture of the vices I purchased.

The first one although you can barely see it has rust on the top edge of the jaws.  Bad for thread!  The second one works the best, but neither this or the other one is very easy to tie a #18 or smaller with.  The green one has lost its pin I'm guessing because the guy I bought it from had an allen wrench in the pin's spot, and the jaws when tightened down slide a little.  One goes higher than the other and little hooks, which I would think jaws this fine would be for, get launched through the room like they came out of a sling shot.  Then I have to vacuum to make sure my wife doesn't find it with her little toes.  OMG would I be in trouble then!

As I said they may not work as well as I want, but they work well enough to tie with.

That one on the right looks like one rugged vise. Any hope of refurbishing it?

I don't know enough about it.  Honestly it is pretty clean.  It has a threaded hole on top as if something were meant to screw into it, and aside form the missing pin and the jaws doing a funny grab that propells hooks, it is alright.

How would you even go about it?

Well I just broke it all down and see why it doesn't grip correctly the jaw tips are bent out of alignment and one is a bit smaller than the other.  So maybe I Can bend it back and grind the tips to even with a dremel.  You think?
