MAINE - Life in the Slow Lane
Ziggy my small stream setup is a 6'6" 4wt glass rod that Bill Franke made for me and I use a Pflueger reel that has all of Bill's retro fit stuff on it. Used it just today and had a ball with lots of 8 to 10 inch wild brook trout. Story to come soon.

Zig that's all I fish out here is a 4 wt although mine is a bit longer 8'6". Although the streams are small there are very few trees on the streams I fish. Thus we are more susceptible to winds. So its nice to have a little more power to get the fly onto the stream. I have landed some nice fish with the rod with no problems. I do have a 7wt that i could use for bass and small pike but have yet to to do so. I also have a 6wt that has landed a 4 1/2 pound small mouth a 30 inch pike and a 6 pound large mouth. All were fun to catch on that rod but I might have been a bit worried with my 4 wt. My next adventure is going to be a bamboo rod maybe a 5 wt 7 footer. Do to the price of the rods and reels I have been waiting for the right time to purchase my dream rod.. In your neck of the woods with all them small Mt streams a 6'6 "4 wt would be perfect in my opinion. Dave V
I think I would like a 6-7 ft 4wt myself. I have a 9 ft 6wt I bought because I wasn't really sure what I sould be fishing for. Bass and Pike require a fairly good sized rod I figured and I have in the past loved fishing for these species.
I have just found it to be a bit much for brookies with Zig on streams that one could jump across and walking through thick forest with a longer rod seems more bothersome to me.
For trout fishing up north a 4wt of this length seems sufficient. I haven't at this point hooked into any dreamy monsters, so I haven't had much use of all the 6wt has to offer.
On the FFinNH forum I am also a member of it seems most are going the way of 2&3 wt rods. I don't believe I am fisherman enough to drop to equipment that light yet. And I am still dreaming of a chance to catch my first Salmon before the chance no longer remains, which could potentially be very difficult on my 6wt.
But a lighter set up would be awesome for stream fishing and on the hunt for natives.
Sadly I'm about broke.

Now to the Rod and Reel question. I just love my little Glass Rod that Bill made for me, but they can be pricie, so save your penies and look for a used Pflueger Medilist in size 1492 that is US made. Bill can make that reel as good as new or better and you will not regreat getting one. I have 3 Pfluegers and they are the most utilitarian reel out there, they just keep working, kind like the Timex Watch.

funny i have a pm into a member on another site that has 3 of these type reel in diffrent sizes and a rod 8 ft for sale i am trying to purchase
Hope it works out bud. I'm going to have to see what I can muster for next year. I'd also like a set of chest waders and a float tube though so it might be a bit too much for next year. We will see how much time I even actually have to fish.
It will be a very exciting year I am sure.

What are most running for small stream set up? i have decided on a 6'6" 4wt glass rod with a hardy featherwieght reel and 4wt dt line. It was recommended by a friend , My hopes are to have this set up before winter to try it out some this fall . I only went this way due to being able to hold and cast this set up. will be good for all brooks and streams i fish all the way up to the small river i fish too. i was told will handle a 20" fish which was my fear, due to the fact i fish in waters that produce fish in the 20" class often.
