Go to this LINK and near the 5:15 minute mark in the video he uses a whip finish tool. Not sure if this will help or not.

Ziggy here is the answer for you.

Ziggy if you are near a fly shop go in and ask them to show you how to use it. I can't imagine anyone refusing to help you. Not hard and helps to see it done in person always works for me.
Thank you guys this was helpful, And yes caddis i too need to be right next to someone to see what they are doing to pick it up most times .... i think what i need to do, is exactly what they are doing in viedo use plain hook thread and tool until i get it down. Thank you for the link Lee is helpful and i am gonna practice it , see if i can get it .... i want to tie some flys today but i am not going to until i figure this out
i want to be confident they will stay together better ... to me its a waste of time to work hard on making something look good but not doing it correctly in the final step to complete it ....
Caddis Unfortunatly there are really no close flyshops to me, the good ones went under or to online sales due to the bigger stores and the internet , sad but fact of life now adays. Internet is great in some ways but very destructive in others..... I lost a couple of Great archery shops due to this
Here is an example of where i am at tying . looks good to me but not finished properly its frustrating to make them look good and not finish them correctly ... i am really not trying to make this a big issue just showing where i am in my tying ... i realize also this is one of the easiest flies to tie
Not to mention this Fly has taken more Trout then i can recall
Mostly Browns and rainbows but some brookies too ........

Ziggy don't get frustrated . I had trouble using my whip finishing tool when I first started . After practicing and using the whip finishing tool over the years has become second nature..My advice to you and have been told this by some great tiers. Start with your favorite fishing fly. Tie this fly and no other until you master that fly. Pick another fly and tie that one until you master that fly. Don't get to hung up on tying to many different flies. Learn to tie you favorite dry stay with it until you feel you have mastered it. Then move on to your favorite nymph, emerger , streamer, wet and so on. To many beginning fly tyers jump from fly to fly without learning the basics of each fly they tie. Don't forget to tie your favorite fly in different sizes . Starting with the larger and working down. Maybe start with a size 14 dry then work your way down to a 22 . Tie 50 or so of each fly until you master each size and that style fly. Trust me you will gain a ton of experience and will enjoy fly tying even more. Soon everything will be second nature.
PS I hardly ever use head cement on my dry flies. I take 3 turns with the whip finisher then another 3 and clip it off. Very rarely do they untie. Now when using deer or elk hair I use the head cement to keep it in place. Davie Mcphail a great fly tier . Likes to use wax instead of glue to tie off his flies. . Well I hope i helped . Good luck happy tying and tight lines Dave V

You just gave me a great example to show you what I mean about using the Icon in the tool bar in the editor. The icon is called "Insert/Edit Image" and is the third one from the left in the lower row. If you click on this it has a dialog box that asks for the URL, paste your link in there. Then pic a new width, in this case 600, height gets filled in automaticly. Leave the rest blank and then go to the "Link" tab and paste the link (URL) again and pic a target of new page (_blank). thats it. So if you want to show a picture that you have stored at 640 or even larger you can and size it when it shows in the forum post. Then if you do the link thing people can click on the picture and see it full size in a new tab or window.
Hope this is not to complicated for you, go here to see how this done. Look at "External URL" section.
This should help.

Ok guys i am pretty new to tying flies i have gotten decent at it, but still a newbie i can tie some basic stuff and they catch fish..... what i still cannot get is how to finish a fly.... i have watched and watched and watched again youtube viedos on the whip fisnisher, i have been doing it by hand and for the most prt my flies have stayed together but i feel i would have better luck with the flies if i could tie them correctly .... i used a fly i love to tie last night after 2nd fish destroyed, unwrapped?? i think its due to my finishing skills. i do the best i can and then use head cement which i feel is what is holding most of my flies together ...... i have had Zero formal tying lessons and this self taught thing is fun but very frustrating at times makes me want to just buy my flies sometimes cause i feel they will last longer. any tips pointers on how to use this stupid whip finsh tool would be great, for some reason i just can't get it to work and need some help ........ i see them do it and go oh no problem but when i try it it doesn't seem to work not sure if i am holding the tool wrong , thread wrong or what the heck, sometimes simple stuff is beyond me and i need someone to sit there with me as i do it to say hey do this ...... very frustrating LOL and it so simple it kills me
