Fly. A single-pointed hook dressed with feathers, hair, thread, tinsel, or any similar material to which no additional hook, spinner, spoon or similar device is added.

Fly Fishing. Casting upon water and retrieving in a manner in which the weight of the fly line propels the fly. No more than 3 unbaited artificial flies individually attached to a line may be used. (NOTE: It is unlawful to troll a fly in waters restricted to fly fishing only).

This is direct from the MIFWD web site. This is the only mention to fly fishing. And you have to be a rocket scientist or Warden to figure out if "weight of the fly line propels the fly..." meaning no additional materials for propeling? I'll do some more research.

I think at one time it was illigal to add a split shot to the line, but now I think it is OK. I do it all the time when I am nymph fishing to get those small (size 20) PT nymphs down to the fish with a dead drift.

The best way to find out for sure is to call someone at F&G and ask the question. Also be aware that if you are fishing a general rule body of water it does not matter what you are using.

As for Pond fishing Scott try size 14 soft hackle flies, they should work as good as anything. Just cast them out and do a slow or fast retrieve, expariment to find out what works best for you and the pond you are fishing at the time. Hope this all helps.

Last Year the lady at the pine tree store basically told me the same thing that you just said Lee. That split shot was allowed for fly fishing in Maine. Now that just the opposite here in NB where your not allowed to add any additional weight to your fly or line while angling in "fly fishing only" areas.

Hey Bill thats how I remember it to be in Maine also but that was a lot of years back. So Maine must have changed the regs. I never understood that regulation. You couldn't add weight to the line but you could use a fly that was tied with lead. Or you could use a sinking line. One of those things in life that makes you say hmm. Dave V
