Quote by: mtnzoneI would have to say Carp pound for pound are the best fighting fish. They arent called freshwater bonefish for nothing......
Here - Here Not only are they strong fighters, they are challenge to hook and challenge to land. The first one I caught on a fly about 20 years ago certainly got my attention! Every time I see tailing carp I can't help think of bonefish in the tropics and we have the same game right here in Maine.
Gosh, I wonder which I would vote for? I might be a little bias, but here goes.
Take the jumping of a SMB add 10 lbs and call it an Atlantic Salmon and you get my vote. Take a Carp, add the jumping of a SMB and call it an Atlantic Salmon and it gets my vote.
SMB, too small, pike, too ugly and carp, all pull, no style.
Nuff said.

A carp is a big gold fish.

I just saw a video, fly fishing for Tarpon.
Not sure without personal experience, but they might go to the top of the class.

Ofcourse I'm biased being a New Brunswicker and all but my vote would have to land squarely on the Atlantic Salmon, fresh run ofcourse. When 3 feet of silver bullet rips 50 yards of line off your reel in 0.02 seconds (OK not that fast but close) then wraps your leader around a piece of jagged granite left over from the last ice age and you know what happens next, well lets just say it's not for faint of heart.

My experience with atlantic salmon is limited to the broodstocks from Pemigewasset, I never had the chance to fish for the real ones, but I can only imagine they are stronger than hatchery fish. But I think that if smallmouth bass could get as big as AS, it would be a tie. Carp is out of the game, it uses very well its weight but that's all.
I have to disagree with most here, I really think the Carp is a very fisty fish and worthy of being concidered best fighting fish. A friend of mine who is an avid Atlasntic Salmon fisherman has told me that he feels an Atlantic can't hold a candle to a steelhead, pound for pound.
Just my two cnts.

Hmm all good points taken . I think today my answer will be any fish that hits my fly is the best fighting fish. Especially sense i havent had a tug on a fly in months. I have to do something about that and soon.
Jake that sounds like fun , Muskie on a fly rod. Good luck. Dave V
Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was
cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time.
On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words,
and some of the words are theirs.
