Here is the quote from HUNTER over on FFinMaine
Yes- the rumor from those with better contacts than I is that it was the commissioner's way of telling the Governor to take his budget cuts and shove them whereever he pleased. Hence renewed push for a license increase. Personnally, I'm not sure it's warranted yet, but that just me. I see a few stocking programs that could be cut or cut back- perhaps it would draw more attention to conservation/restoration of the resource.
I think HUNTER has it right about what should be cut, some of the wasted put and take stocking.

P.S. Thanks Bill for bringing this topic up on this site.

Seems what that person stated on FFinMaine was correct.

Sweet !!!!!! I have to say thats good news for the folks in rural Maine. Good to hear. Dave V
No private water to deal with as far as I know, public boat launch and public access points with signs directing you to the river. and only 2.5 hours from my house, I gotta get over there more this year. That's it I'm applying for my passport no red tape is keeping me from fishing like that. Thats great news that the GLS hatchery is safe for now, but is there a local fisheries advocacy group in that area? Juniper, NB is a small town on the headwaters of the Miramichi and is located in a relatively economically depressed part of the province (OK I know that includes about 3/4 of NB) and their group, Miramichi Headwaters Salmon Federation (MHSF) is alive and vibrant with mbrs spread all eastern Canada and US. They operate a sattelite rearing station, where they grow sea run strain brook trout and sometimes atlantic salmon all for release into the South Branch. They are collecting brood stock in the fall, they operate a flyfishing camp for kids every July, I helped out there for a couple years and last I checked it was open to any 12 - 14 year old who applied regardless of where they live and the cost was only $25.00. I'm thinking that there needs to be a rainy day contingency plan for when the state really try's to shut it down.

I posed the question on FFIM and the answer from one mbr was that it was the commissioner's way of telling the Governor to take his budget cuts and shove them whereever he pleased. Hopefully it is just that, a shock tactic to get the Gov to back off. The parts of Washington County that I have driven through doesn't seem to be an area of high economic activity where one could land a good paying job easily. So a closure such as the GLS Hatchery would be devastating to that area.
