Hi Guys

Here is a .link to a thread on another web site about what they call "spot burning" - meaning that people give to much info in a post about a fishing spot. What do you all think about this.

My thought is that most on that site are making a mountain out of a mole hill. I think it is BS that areas get overriden with fisherman if you tell to much about a specific spot on a river. My feeling is that timing is everything in life. A fishing spot good one day may be terrible the next and especially after a week has gone by.

Just curious what you all think about this.

Lee

Lee,
I have no problems telling people where I'm fishing, etc. The attitude you get from guys that refuse to "share" strikes me as an elitist attitude and does not bode well for the sport in general. We're trying to attract more anglers to the sport, nit frustrate them.

Ok my point of view, I have travled all across the country fly fishing my little heart out. I have gone into many fly shops begging or hoping for some infomation. I could tell from the way they carried thier conversation they were hiding something from me. I believe allot of these shops have a contract with thier guded service they provide So they protect areas from the average Joe like myself. So the people who pay good money will have a better chance to catch fish. I don't agree with these shop owners Like Dave G said its frustrating to the average person and I have turned away from some shops (InYellowstone) talking to myself vowing never to return. Lucky for me people at gas stations will be more then glad to give out info and I did find a good fly shop in Yellowstone to help me out free of charge. Now for me . If I run into people on a stream and they approah me for information I will be quick to offer up hot spots and what the fish are hitting on. Now that beiing said you hope these people have good eithics. There are some people who will destroy a good hole and will destroy the next honey hole if given the chance. That is why some shops are a little uneasy about giving away hot spots. I must confess I have some hot spots I protect because they hold good fish meaning brood stock. I won't even fish these holes to protect them. Most of these spots are hard to reach so they pretty much protect themselves. But I will never offer these spots just in case.

If I just wanted casting practice I would fish in a bath tub on my
lawn. I like to at least know there is a fish there. I do not necessarily
have to catch one. I have seen way too many ponds and small lakes
stripped of trout in a matter of days once the word is out that it is
good fishing there. Now when I discover a place that has fish, my lips are sealed.
Migratory fish are a different matter altogether...One day the pool
might be full of fish...twenty minutes later...empty. So secrecy is
not a great concern.

I like the responces we have gotten so far. I really think that what they are saying on that tread is don't publicise an area or river spot, which is all well and good, but I find that national articles about an area do more harm then local forums. I really think that is what happened to the Rapid River in Maine, it was national articles about it that made it so popular. Again just my two cents.

True, Very True Lee. Look at the boys to the north of us , Their Salmon rivers have been pounded because of TV and Magor mags. Then you will have some people including the Gov telling us how much money it brings to the region.
