Learning from this post. Thanks. Had to look up the hydro.  Looks very similar to my bead head caddis. I typically fish the hares ear as an emerger and will have to try the CDC type you guys are talking about.

Was just thinking about your comment about 20 flies and thought what if it were only one. I thought maybe I'd choose a black wooly bugger which is generally what I end up with if it's really slow.  Would you choose one of your three if you had to choose just one?

Just one?!  No one can eat just one....

if I could only have one it would be either the WDH or the Usual.  They both can be fished multiple ways and tie in multiple sizes and colors.

i fish the WDH more so I know it better, but the Usual is a much more versatile fly, I just need to fish it more.

For me one fly would be the Muddler Minnow, again as others have said it can be fished in many ways, as a streamer, as a dry or even as a nymph in a very small size.

See Yah
Thanks

Lee you need to teach me how to fish that fly, I can tie them but I am yet to catch anything with them.

I didn't realize  that the Wood Duck Heron was so unique to NH . When I was home looking for them in Maine I couldn't find any in the fly shops . Was kind of bummed out. Same as the old streamer patterns . None were tied with Jungle Cock eyes .

Yeah the WDH was invented in Manchvegas and never traveled too far.  I am getting into tying the old patterns these days they seem to work much better for me, but the original recipes are hard to find.  Fran Better's widow sent me a video of Fran tying his flies, amazing guy, I wish I had known him.

Pretty special to have his videos. I to have never met the man . Would have been nice to learn first hand from him .
