Let it not be said that we have lost touch with reality here on this forum. 
Assume for a moment that we are a trout. And for the first part of this exercise we are an 8 inch, fresh stocked Brook Trout. Now we've been chawin on those lovely tan colored pellets since we started life. And so, a Maple Syrup will sucker them every time. Howsomever, it won't be on a #32 Maple Syrup, but rather something along the #16 or #14 size as this would be similar in size to the original pellets.
In a release of trout, a stocking, there will be some trout of normal intelligence, and a few of superior intelligence. Some whose light shines brighter than his compadras. Realizing that there are no longer easily obtained pellets, these dudes will make the connection that bugs are good to eat. The smarter of the pile will soon realize that there are bugs, and then there are bugs with hooks in them. After they break off a few times they'll swear off bugs and go for minnows and craw dads.
Those who stay on the bug diet are accustomed to seeing, and eating, average, or normal size bugs. That is to say, we as humans are used to eating corn on the cob that is say between 6 inches and perhaps 12 inches in length. Now if someone slid us a plate of corn on the cob that was and inch long, or some that was 2 feet long, our first thought would be :wtf: Same same for Mr Fish.
So, if y'all are gonna use them #32 flies, the secret may just be to tie enough of em on the leader so they LOOK like an average size morsel. I'd reckon it'll take about a dozen in a clump to size up to a mayfly imitation.
While this may in fact sucker a few in, keep in mind , the Fish Cops may get real tense when they see you with 12 hooks on your line

The link you posted contained nice info into cold weather fishing...BUT....
In New Brunswick the trout season opens May 1st and closes september 15th
Thus eliminating any use i would have for anything smaller than a #12.
Besides, my eyeballs would likely roll of the table trying to tie anything that small.
I trust you have not been offended by my little jabs at tiny flies..I am truly envious
of those who can.tie them.
After mastering the tiny flies, may I humbly suggest a move up to larger flies for framing.
Perhaps a Silver grey or silver doctor salmon fly...size 3/0 or 4/0..After tying a few of these
you should have rounded off your tying abilities so you can handle any fly in between.
Frist, no offense taken, I have very thick skin and tend to poke back when jabbed.

Had I seen this earlier, guess what everyone would have gotten for Christmas? I plan to hit the local craft store for the after x-mas clearence sale and pick up a case of the clear hobby bulbs for next year.. The 3/0 streamers will be a difficult fit but I'm willing to bet I can get a 1/0 or 2 in there nicely. I have some feathers from a friends macaw I have been saving and I think this will be an excellent use for them.
Many of the trout streams around here are also closed for the winter, however there are several with no closed season that still produce the occasional fish. So I figure why not try out the micro flies; it should improve my tying skills, and fishing them will improve my "on the river" skills. The one skill mentioned in that article that I especially want to work on is getting the fish on the reel fast. That single aspect has cost me more nice fish than I care to think about.
For me it's all about trying new things and learning what works for me and what does not.
Oh and by the way, I use a jewler's magnifier to tye all my flies 
I love it. Keith I have talked to a few guides here in my area and they all say the same thing . During the winter months the fish will take very small midges on the water . I hope to find out this winter . Now if i can get one tied up to give it a try, Yes the older you get the smaller the flies get
I dun get it. A fish is a cold blooded animal. As the water temp goes down so does their metabolism. Be one thing in late Summer to do the #32 trick, but in the dead of Winter

Koda I have the same thoughts as you .I have to give a try though. My guess late winter when temps start to warm up is my best shot. I can't wait to give it a whirl . Freezing gudies a stiff line and frozing digits here I come.
I think I would find it most pleasant to be sitting next to a hot stove and chatting with Koda
and helping him dispose of his mash....While Dave and Ktbone were out freezing their kanoodles off
