Deadliest fly pattern on the planet for brook trout I am told. And I never caught a damn one on them. Reckon I just got no faith in em and don't fish em proper. But then, I do have my favs and am not lackin for hook ups

Well that is good to know. I will try it next time I'm out. I have never fished this pattern before.
The deadliest brok trout pattern I know is a stimulator.
I know Lee said that this fly was one of his dad's favorites . Dang T-Bone you got me wanting to tie some flies again. Now I have to get busy and clean a spot on the bench to do so. 
I tie a Black fly I call the "Horsefly" & I can't keep Monster Perch off it 
I've also heard they are good for brookies. I just tied a couple up myself with the hackle wings. I've never had much luck on them either, but my brother in law seems to do pretty well on them with the marabou wing. He's a pretty messy fly tyer and I wonder if that helps. Marabou everywhere.

In the nymph game, the gruffier the better. Picture perfect ties just don't produce like the "improper" ones. I am suspect that this alone has produced more fly tiers per capita than all the "How to" books combined 
I love the Black Ghost, I hooked, and proptly lost the biggest salmon I have ever seen on a size 6 6X long this fall. I threw it under a log hanging about a foot above the water, stiped it fast a few times then wham, massive roll and hook up. It jumped compleatly out of the water and landed with a big thud and a bigger splash. Then came up again and tail walked across the pool and threw the hook as it slid back into the water. Must have been over 24 inches long and at least 5 pound. An absolute brute.

That would have been a lot better post had you said you had him in the net and got a picture or two Those big ones have a way of getting off, and, gettig even bigger.
I had a 10 pound + Brook Trout on once, wife went to slide the net under her and she got off in the last second. That fish still haunts me

That sounds like a typical salmon hook up to me. That is why I have taken to double setting the hook and pulling them down when they leave the water...doubled my number in the net.
For me I get the most salmon on a #6/6x Gray Ghost with 3 4mm red plastic beads as trailers.
Here is another fly I gave a whirl for the first time. I was pretty impressed with the simplicity and yet elegance of this classic streamer.
