Well as many of you may know I have really been enjoying the hell out of my 3wt this year, in fact since I got it I have hardly touched my 5wt.  Well this further spurred on a certian bruin loving old codger on this forum to coax and goad me into an even lighter weight set up.

After what seemed to be an interminally long wait Koda finally came through with a nice 1wt blank, all be it a pathetic pea soup green color.Crazy

So my goal for this project is to see just how light I can make this little set up.  I set a goal of 8-9oz all up weight so we will see how it goes.

So here is the plan:

1wt 6' blank

Lite build epoxy thread coat

Struble rosewood down locking seat

Half wells cork grip

Fuji single foot eyelets and tip top

Forbes magnesium reel

Rio Trout LT 1wt line

I will post pictures of the components on the scale as I assemble them.

I also need to think about what color(s) thread to use to make the green a bit more livable.

Any comments and/or advice throughout the process are welcome.

More to come..........

Looks like its going to be fun!

I'm not entirely sure what it is about a new rod that gets me so excited.  I'm beginning a collection.  Most recently I obtained an Orvis power matrix 4wt.  I can't wait to throw some line with it.

Yup T it's an addiction; wait til you build one then you really get the bug!

Counting this one I now have seven: 1wt -6', 3wt- 6'8",4wt-11', 5wt-8'4", 5wt-8'-10", 8wt-9' and my uncle's alluiminum mystery wt.

After this I may look into a 00wt or maybe I'll just take a break (not likely).

Sounds like I should just stay away from the rod building thing.  From what I have witnessed here on the site once you start you turn into a fly rod Laughing Out Loud I am trying to save up for retirement .I am afraid what could happen to my savings if I started building rods .  Keith looking fwd to seeing progress of your rod. T-Bone I hear good things about Orvis . Keep me updated . Dave V

The build looks exciting.  My friend and I have been in rod building mode the past couple months.  Think he is ready to learn to fly cast next season, now that I willingly took up the baitcasting rod.  I picked up a three weight rod last spring on a trade for some work and used it this summer for the first time.  I didn't do a lot of trout fishing this season, but I also found myself using the three weight instead of the old 5 weight.

The spinning rods we made were Seeker brand s-glass rods that we got from Mudhole.  They are also a pea green color.  I used a medium olive thread (Prowrap Desert Camo) and my friend used a slightly darker olive (Prowrap Olive).  No color preserver and the thread got quite dark.  Darker than I had hoped, but still okay and I liked the lighter olive better than the darker.  If I were to do it again, I think I would use the same color with color preserver or would try to find a lighter olive (maybe Prowrap Kiwi) that darkened to a color closer to the blank color.  We also used the Prowrap Chestnut color as an accent that darkened to a rich burgundy color that we both agreed would have looked nice on the green.  I used it on my son Jack's spinning rod on a slate colored MHX blank from mudhole.  I also had ordered a blank for Jack and decided it was too heavy, so I made my first baitcaster with it.  I used a really light grey (Prowrap silver shiner) that turned just about transcluscent on the blank without color preserver.  I was pretty happy with that look.

Attached a couple photos below.  First is turning the reel seats.  Used a piece of real Cuban mahogany we had in the shop.  Turned beautifully.  Second shot is the Seeker.   Third is the MHX baitcaster.  Fourth is the MHX spinning rod with chestnut color wraps.  Last is the rod tubes we made from a vinyl downspout from Homey's.  $8 or so for a 10' length.  Union pieces were $1.50 or so each and then I just epoxied in a piece of pine for a cap.  About $16 for two tubes.  Each holds two rods.

My! you have been busy.  I was thinking of turning my own seat when I started but I do not have easy access to a lathe anymore (my brother moved), plus I found the Struble seat on clearence and it was crazy light.  The bigest bonus with this seat is the bore matches the blank so no spacers needed.

Stephen, I think we bought our first casting outfit from the same placeBig Grin

I had a six foot bamboo pole that they used to use to wrap carpet around (free behind the store), some cheap line and a tin of hooks.

Caught some monster fish with that rig.

So after thinking about it last night on my three hour drive home I am now rethinking my next rod choice.  Now I am thinking about building up a bamboo rod.  I'm thinking about making it a real show piece that you can fish with, agate guides, burled seat, silk line, etc.  So for those out there fishing the boo is it worth it?

BTW - I did manage to get the seat and grip glued up last night, pictures to follow.

Keith fishing a bamboo rod is in a class of it's own.  Be prepared to pay some bucks for the silk line . They require some maintenance but do they cast nice once they are broke in.  They cut the wind much better then plastics and are smaller in diameter A down side to the line is you cant fish them in freezing temps .  Boo blanks come in all kinds of taper. These days you can get fast taper all the way to full flex rods. All I can tell you is once you get used to bamboo its hard to go back . Another great feature you feel the fight of the fish right down to the grip. Every head shake . I waited until I was 51 to get my first boo. I wasted allot of years of not taking the leep. just my 2 cents Dave V
