Well work has been hell for the last few weeks so I decided (with the help of my friend Mark) to reward myself with a little day and half trip to Pittsburg. Now I have been to Pittsburg numerous times but believe it or not I have never fished there.
We started out Sunday well before the crack of dawn and headed directly for the northern most point in NH, Boundary Pond. Mark has been fishing this area for years and had never fished Boundary Pond so it seemed like the perfect thing to do. The water levels all over Pittsburg are very low, but the constant rain we are getting now should help. The long drive in was uneventful with sightings of turkeys, deer, and one energetic but very flabby moose.
I was a bit worried when we got to the pond because everything was under construction and they just finished a brand new dam. We launched the float tubes and divided the pond, Mark taking the right half and me the left (using the same fly). Our intent was to meet on the Canadian side and switch coming back.
In no time I was on the fish, some beautiful dark brookies. They were very aggressive with many of them breaking the surface and riding tail. I had a few toss the hook but brought my fair share to the net (over a dozen). Mark while not doing quite as well still managed his fair share of Boundary Pond Brookies.
As afternoon came around the weather grew worse at times coming down in a heavy, cold, soaking rain. We hit Scott’s Bog and Round Pond before night fall but with little luck. I did manage to get a good hit, but it broke off mid fight (don’t buy Rio Powerflex leaders!).
Monday morning started with more of the same weather, this really seemed to aggravate Mark’s degenerative spine issues so we decided to seek some nourishment first and fish our way back home.
After breakfast we hit Profile Lake, no rain but the wind was blowing so hard that casting was near impossible and moving the float tubes against the wind was worse. We hit a spot on the Pemmi that I had some luck in, at this point Mark was quite uncomfortable so I fished for a bit, a few short strikes and one break off (either a salmon or a bow, not sure).
Despite the cold rainy weather I had a great time and enjoyed spending time with a good friend, and I managed to catch a few fish in the process.

Nice report Keith. These continual cold fronts one after another with the freakin rain aren't condusive to the better fishing that usually happens in the Fall. So with that said you did well.

Many a year ago we fished Scott's Bog. You could wear out a new fly rod on the Brookies in there back then, and there was some darn nice ones in there. Took a lot of whoppers out of Coon's Brook which comes in on the left when you face the inlet. Too, there is a good feeder on the far side of the 1st CT Lake, don't remember the name, but took some very nice fish where it entered the lake. All good to know when you hit it again with your 1 WtBig Grin

Nice report , Glad you got out and did a little fishing. I will take your rain . Like Koda said its strange how one side of the country its pouring cats and dogs while other side the lakes are drying up. Going to be an intresting winter for you folks . Nice brookies by the way . Ya i have had my problems with Rio also. I just thought it had got a little old.

Good to hear that you are getting out my friend.  I too have had some trouble connecting with fish.  I went for a whole weekend in spots I had been a week or two before when they were producing to find dismal fishing.  For a weekend of fishing I came up with 2 rainbows around 15 inches.  One in the Pemi on a Sunday morning, and one in the Amonoosuk the evening before.  As for my partner in crime, my brother, he managed a few fall fish and a small mouth between both locations.  But nothing memorable at any rate.

Can't go that day or the 12th, chimney being swept on the 8th and another grandson being married on the 12th.  Any other time would be fine for now.

See Yah

You can just never have enough rods it seems.  LOL!

I love my short 2WT for stream fishing and small rivers.  I can never get rid of my 6WT for trips to Pulaski and salmon fishing here even.  I got an old hand me down 5WT for a back up at the moment but I'm thinking that I would like a 9 ft 4 piece 4WT as my all around rod, and of course a 7 or 8WT for the salt.

My list of must haves get bigger and bigger!  I'd also love a float tube and and another pair of waders.

Yes, I do believe we should start a local chapter of fly rods anonymous.

I have my 7'9" 3wt that is my go-to rod, my 8'6" 5wt, 9'0" 8wt, 11'0 4wt czech nymph rod, and now I am building a 6'0" 1wt.

I think I will have the spectrum pretty well covered. but we'll seeBig Grin  (perhaps I will need a 00wt in the future)
