Ktbone . What would you say the reason for the Milford section being sterile might be.?
KTbone
I believe it's 111 headed towards Peperell (sp) but on the Hollis side. There is a dinner on the right. Down in back of it up and down river you'll find some fantastic trout fishing. Good bows, brookies, and some really big browns. I can burn the spot because I don't live down that way any more, and you needed the info. We take care of family here
Oh, and go with a red quill dry fly in a size 14 or 16
First light is the best time to hit it but the last light can be as productive.
Thanks for the tip Koda, I believe I know just the spot you are speaking of, I may need to give it a shot next time I'm down that way.,
Dave,
I grew up on the Souhegan in Milford and for much of my life that river was an open sewage system and a toxic waste dump. They claim the river is rehabilitated but I have my doubts. The area we were fishing was right behind the hatchery's storage pond and I know the fish "escape" into the river frequently. I cannot think of any reason for that section of river to be so devoid of fish life. There was a good food source, great flow and airation, and there was tons of fish holding structure. I am going to have to check out the area some more to see what's going on.
Lee,
I know I am tied up for the next few weekends but maybe right around Memorial day weekend or the follow we can get together.

That's to bad Ktbone. I know how you feel my old stomping grounds were a factory dumping ground . The Kennebec River by Waterville- Winslow was the same way. There is hope for you . The Trout and Salmon are slowly returning to that area . As well as Sea run Browns . Stripers to. Mother Nature will heal itself once man clears the path.
Went back to my home waters today for the first time in years. I fished the the Souhegan from west Milford to Wilton with my friend Mark. The Milford section could be best described as sterile. Lots of bugs hatching but not a single fish taking and we covered alot of water. We decided to move upstream to Wilton and that was a good choice. When we arrived there were many large fish jumping, We tied on some BWO's that I had tied the night before and a few minutes later the first fish was landed, a good brookie. I followed that up with two more brookies and two very good sized browns. Mark was playing with a very reluctant fish that was taking every fly around but his, but his patience paid off and he landed a small but well earned first fish of the season for him.
Of note the water flow was very good considering where it was just a few short weeks ago, and I can atest to the fact that it is very cold. I would not reccomend wading without some "insulation".
FYI- the camera is definetly dead and I have ordered a new one, waterproof, so I should have some photos for my next outing.
