I'm heading up to Maine this weekend to fish some backcountry ponds that I've never fished. I've known about them but never fished them first hand so it will be a new experience. One place I plan to hit is way up near the border and only recently lost it's ice. I'm planning to fish slow and deep with small nymphs and midges. I might mix it up with some streamers. Just curious what you guys would try for patterns just after ice out?

Paul

If I were you I would try some size 12 or 14 softhackles.  Small marabou softhackle streamers should work as well.  Let us know what you do and post some pictures if you can.

Good Luck

See Yah
Thanks

Ah Yes... Soft hackles. Good idea! I need to keep some in my arsenal of patterns since they are effective. I should be more diligent about using them more  and more for all conditions. Thanks for reminding me Cool

Can't go wrong with the good old wooly bugger, wood duck heron, and nice soft hackle royal coachman.

Good luck Paul, we want lots of pictures.

Drys, on account of they are the most fun. Really, the rest, are just bugs Mr. Green

So, so far we have drys, wets, streamers, and nymphs....sage advice all and narrows it down nicely.

Paul if all the above fail try a quarter stick tied to a rockEek!

Yes I agree Koad dries are way more fun but he asked right after ice out. So I woukd go wet until the temps come up and the fish come up to feed on the surface Thinking

Yah but Dave, try the dry. If no takes don't dope it, let it sink. Same same streamer Mr. Green
