I contacted the Master of the Heron (Darrell) and he sent this back:
"wrap so the stem does not over lap and keep wetting the fly!! ICan send you some also Dick Talleurs book favorite flies has a photo example! Darrell. Ps Went Opeechee today five Salmon one really nice over twenty!,,"
Darrel is awesome! Great guy, but I haven't heard much from him since last fall. I hope we will reconnect soon, as I would love to show him some of my tying work, and see if he can teach me how to tie that wood duck heron as well. It is one hell of a fish catcher.
Beautiful looking flies
Koda i am going the easy way i usually have a box full of these to fish with i usually get 50$ worth of heron flies from my friend tony who ties them very well they tie up a bronze mallard that is similar and the trout and salmon love that as well then you can get into there olive wooducks which are very productive as well, Woodduck heron is 1st fly i have ever caught a fish on fly rod and it was slab crappies in manchester at the big lake , i need more .. i lost the one from a swap a nice smallie thought it outta have it more then me oh well , lol my problem isi give too many away on the water while fishing so people can use them and catch some fish
.... i will learn from tony and start tieing my own . havnt really seen or talked to him much since his dad , nick passed ....i outta call him and see if he is going to alton for opening day he never missed it in the past ?

I've seen a lot of"dyed wood duck" mallard feathers and have yet to see one that's so close you can't tell em apart. To bad too, because the mallards I find easier to control than the wood duck feathers.
Our Bill on this forum did some nice ones for the swap. I'm waitin to see if he chimes in here with some juicy secrets
I just learned the trick to tying these today; as was mentioned leave a gap (about 3-4 thread wraps) between each turn of the wood duck, and wrap it on the flat of the quill not the edge like you would do on a wooley. Oh and if it is not too obvious tie it in at the tip to get the longer quils on top.
I will be tying up a bunch this weekend to T_bone you will be all set when we meet up.

That makes sense Keith, I'll give that a whirl. Thanks!
Okay so there is a difference in the fly if I make it with bronze mallard rather than wood duck...? I have been wondering that for a while now.
Koda, I have Darrell's address. Thank you. I sent him an email a while back and hadn't heard anything since. I think I may have offended his friends somehow or something. He introduced me to a bunch of people and got me involved with Manchestef Fly Fishing Association last fall, and I saw him at the first meeting and haven't seen him sense. I honestly did not care much for his friends there. Witht he exception of two people I felt as though I was ignored and given the cold shoulder a lot. When I was spoken to other than by those two people I mentioned above, I felt as though I was being talked down to and treated as if I was ignorant. So I quit going.
It seemed like Darrell's son didn't care much for me either. I don't know what I did or didn't do but I just didn't feel like I was fitting in. Too bad really because I got the feeling Darrell fished with these people a lot and I was really hoping to get to know Darrell better and fish with him, but if they didn't like me as I suspect, I doubt it will ever work out.
The video that was posted is William (FLYSPOKE), a fly casting instructor here in NH, and a prominent member that I liked a lot from "the dark side." William was always very kind to me and explained things I didn't understand with an impartial position that didn't leave me feeling stupid. I have to respect that, with all that judgement that flies around over there.
A while back Darrell Glenclose (T Bone knows him as well) brought me up some Wood Duck Herons. At first they looked queersome but the more I looked at them there was/is something to them.
What I tie to troll with is NOT wood duck herons, I don't even know if they have a name or even exist other than they evolved over time and work slick around here.
Last night I tried tying one of the real ones up. OMG! It looks like a feather duster
I can see I have a challenge ahead of me.
I found one U tube on doing it but his didn't look much better than the one I did.
Somebody in the swap did some and those looked "proper". What's the trick Bill?
