In the 2 part of the video I posted earlier this week did any of you catch the unique whip finishing tool he uses. Also could Carrie Stevens also be the creator of the hot spot on a fly. First time I have ever seen this technique on a streamer adding a different thread color to form a ban on the head of the fly. Thus a hot spot. I didn't know  she had done this until this video. No one had ever mentioned this before. Am I the only one who missed this all these years ?

Dave

The band of colored thread Carrie used on the head of the fly was put there by her to distinguish her flies from other tyers according to my reference library of 8 skillion fly tying books.

Traveling "Scissorbeaks"  often got duped into buying flies that they were led to believe she had tied, by unscrupulous merchants, and that's when she started "banding" them.

According to my source, she used very specific colors in her feathers. Hence for example, all Gray Ghosts are not created equal. Her fly would kill em on the Maine waters while Taiwan Timmy look alikes got nary a hit.

In one of my books it makes comment that Carrie had a wicked crush on our very own Lee !

In as far as the whip finish method, it is the exact type I use when wrapping a rod. If there is any advantage, it would be that the tag end of the thread gets directed towards the back end of the fly. With the head cements we have at our disposal today I don't see that style as nesc, but, if one wants to do it the old way for nostalgia I'm all for it! Mr. Green

I believe Carrie did much for the New England streamer flies and she has earned a place in our hearts and our history.
