So I made it out fishing today with my daughter  and last minute decided to meet up with Ziggy.  He was going to be fishing the same brook anyhow.  Fished a little, took alot of pictures and had a great couple of hours.  I started out in one spot and must have fished the hell out of it.  Ziggy must have thought I was crazy.  I missed the same nice brookie two times.  He was in this one spot and must have been 20"...well not really.  He was a nice fish for this brook though.  On this brook we tend to catch more fish, but smaller fish.  I lost this one fish on a stimulator twice to I switched to a small streamer with no luck. Ziggy had fished about three other holes at this point and I decided to put the stimulator back on.  Ziggy kept telling me there were some fish in the other hole above that he missed.  I honestly think he just wanted to get me the Hell away form this hole so he could have it for himself Smile  I caught the fish, he wasn't any monster, but good sized for this brook.  I'm bad at guessing size, maybe 8-9"?  I'm sure ziggy will tell you all the fish was only 4".  No picture of this one.

All in all and enjoyable start to my vacation!

Nice man, very nice!  I see another little Joan Wulff there in the making Smile

Way back when, the Blackfeet would have called us the "Fur Faces". I can live with that Mr. Green

So Ziggy lies like a Turk about fish size? Yours are small and his are big even though they are all the same size? I once golfed with a guy like thatLaughing Out Loud  Counted 14 swipes at the ball before it went in the hole. Hey Chuck, what you get on that hole? Let's see, I parred it!

Seriously though, if you can hook up with him and fish that pond we both hit in Groton you'll be in for some big fish.

Dave, It was a sloooooow shutter speed. The best thing to do with todays cameras is take em off auto. For that shot I'd have gone to shutter priority on my Sonys.

Thanks for sharing Nic.  I feel as though I have not done my part to meet up with you, but man I have I been busy lately it seems.

I am  changing to 3rd shift for a couple of months maybe more, to see if I can still hack it.  That means I will see my wife daily again.  So if I see her daily, weekend days of fishing don't seem so impossible.  I just got to keep up with my chores and stuff.  LOL.

I have been toying around with some ideas to go fishing at Berry's Brook, or one of the three rivers.  Although I feel bad because I have not contributed to the program they have in place.  I saw that they were looking for volunteers on next Saturday which would ease my conscience, but it will be after I get out of work at the end of my first week back on third.  I'm thinking sleep will be unavoidable.

Speaking of which I need some now!  ....Soon enough....

I tied like 40 flies today.  Nothing too impressive in my opinion, but I wouldn't give it up.  I hadn't tied in over a week and was itching to practice, skills I was getting confident with and new ones I had been thinking about.

Well I'm glad to see you take your daughter fishing.  My mother has been giving me so much BS about raising a girl as a girl, and I don't even know if it is going to be a boy or girl yet.  I say you can raise em almost exactly the same and everything would be fine.  Their gender concerns are biologically programmed, and there aren't and haven't been any gender identity issues in our families, so....  Wow I'm rambling tired.

Talk to you all when I'm coherent again.

Thanks,

Theron

Dave,

Koda is right, slooooowww is the name of the game.  You need two things to get shots like this:

1) slow shutter speed.  I start around 1/2 a second and go slower from there.  Great thing about digital you can try a few settings and throw away what you don't like!  I think this picture was around a 3 second shutter time.

2)  A tripod.  You want the water to blur, but not everything else like the rocks around.  For this you need a tripod.  My wife got me mine, but I think it cost around $30-$40 at Ritz camera.  Nothing super expensive is needed here.

I have an SLR and I put mine on shutter priority mode.  This means I pick the shutter speed and the camera adjusts the rest.  You could also go full manual of course.  Many cameras allow you do this, check out your user manual and look for shutter priority or anything allowing you to change the shutter speed.

Hope this helps and thanks for the compliements!

-Nic

Theron:

I just found out two good things:

1) Newfound River:  open until the end of October

2) Sugar River: open until the end of November

So really we have until the end of November to meet up and do some fishing.  Plus we have all winter to tie flies!
