I have been kicking around the Idea of buying a kit from Maxima and start to build my own leaders i know a few who do it already and they say they can build there own to what kind of fishing they intend to do,

It seems to help with the fly turning over and such, some are delicate and some strong . i have looked up charts and stuff to build some and look forward to adding this part of flyfishing to my tool bag Smile

What are your thoughts do any here make there own leaders? What are the Pro's and con's? if any?

What material do you use ?

Do you use any specific chart or found your own formula?

 Hi Ziggy

If I make a leader I generally use Maxima...As I fish mostly Atlantic salmon and a few brook trout

I generally use the same leader for both..I start with a pice of 12 pound test...Add a section of 10 pound test..

And use 8 pound for the tippet. ( The trout here are not as finicky as other places)

The only drawback to this method it the couple of extra knots to contend with.

I have tried the other leaders..woven etc....And have removed them and burnt them shortly after trying them.

Definately not worth the price they charge for them.
