Well seeing that these seem to work well for me i spent a better part of the day tying some of these buggers up , you can see some variations i use they all work ... I know i know LOL they are just buggers but i don't care as long as the fish keep likeing them Smile these are all the ones i put the smaller beads on ties a dozen yesterday with bigger beads not good with sizes of stuff yet but the smaller beads are intended for 12-14 sized hooks i squish down barb to get these on but they come out nice and have enough weight to get down in the med flows Smile heavy beads heavy flows ... obivoulsy

A quick question for you Zig . Have you ever tied buggers with a bright orange or red bead ? Like the egg sucking leech . I wounder how that would work . Just curious.   Do you use lead wire or a lead substitute to add weight to the fly  or do you just use the bead for weight ?  Dave V

Dave i have not tried the color beads, but you just struck my memory of a huge rainbow i caught on a wally world special LOL . before i started tying not long ago.... i bought some cheap flies from wally world one was a bright green head black bodied woolybugger(maybe a egg sucking leech as you describe)  , i used it at the ct river and 1st cast caught a 19" bow was a beautiful fish second cast big fish never saw it and it liked my fly so much it took it for its collection Smile since then i have not seen them at the store but now that i tie i can make some up thanks Smile

As far as lead i do not use it this time of year the beads seem to do just fine for late spring / summer flows but during the early spring March april i use some lead wire wrap just to make sure they get down to the fish that are close to the bottom chasing smelt Smile

Nice ties ziggy!  I never thought the other day when I saw your fall apart after that 2nd fish, that there is an easy way to add some durability!  I'm not sure how you guys tie your flies, but here is how I tie my buggers:

after tying in the tail I tie in fine wire and leave it hanging off the back.  Next I wrap the body (in this case the peacock herl).  At this point your thread will be at the head of the fly.  Tie in your hackle at the base at the HEAD of the fly.  Wrap your hack backwards toward the tail, upon reaching the hook bend wrap the wire over the hackle and as a ribbing all the way up to the head and tie down.  I suppose if you were really against wire you could use thread.  I like the wire for flash but in some instance use black wire.  This seems to add a great deal of durability preventing both the body material or hackle from coming unwound.  In this case of using peacock herl as a body, I spin mine prior to wrapping.  Tie in the herl by the TIPS and then twist it to create a rope before wrapping up the hook.

I'd love to hear other ideas of how you guys may tie your flies if you have them.  I'll post some pictures of some flies I've tied soon!  I haven't had the time to figure our the picture posting yet.

Nic that's how I tie my buggers to. Like you said adds durability as well as flash.  Speaking of flash sometimes I will add a couple strips of fashibo for more flash.  Zig and Nic you ever think about getting together and start a tying club ?

To be honest i just met Nic a few days ago in person about a month ago online we actually live really close to each other and that would be a great idea... I have just started like a year ago and do ok but always looking to evolve and nic seems to be good at it and has done it for 10 years if i remember correctly. i am not sure who around here would come but could be a winter time sport ... I just want to tie with some diffrent people to see many diffrent styles then i can form my own forrm the little bits and pieces i like from each... Thats how i learned the trade i do for money Smile
