I your opinion what is the best fighting freshwater fish ?

Dave

That opens up a real can of worms. Are Atlantic Salmon, Steelhead and other fish considered Freshwater or Saltwater species, they spawn in freshwater. If they are AS and Steelhead are the best fighting fish. If not then it might be SmallMouth Bass or LL Salmon.

Just my two cents.

Your right I didnt think of it that way. Sense I havent ever fished for Atlantic Salmon or Steelhead I can't give my opinion on that. I can say with out a doubt that small mouth are probally the most scrapy of the warm water speices, How ever pound for pound the bluegill ranks right up there with the smallmouth. I also have to say that bluecat and channel catfish are pretty good fighters to.

I would have to say Carp pound for pound are the best fighting fish. They arent called freshwater bonefish for nothing......

Hi Dave
I have the same bias as lahave, but I'm gonna vote for the
Atlantic salmon.
Although, I hooked Father in the corner of the eye years ago,
and if I remember right, he put up a pretty good fight. I know
his language was quite colorful at the time. Big Grin

I'll second the carp vote. I hooked into one in my hometown of Springfield, MA. in a body of water locally known as Watershops Pond. Not the cleanest body of water but boy did they have some monster carp. Eek!

The pick-up was extremely gentle but once it realized it was hooked it felt like a log that had a motor on it!! Crazy stuff. Luckily my saltwater reel was up to the challenge, but I expected to see smoke coming off the cork drag.

On another note, I want to vote pickerel and pike as the most exciting strike. Just the thought of a large pickerel coming across an open weed filled bay to engulf my deer hair mouse imitation on Merrymeeting Marsh in the springtime sends chills up my spine.

I now know what the sailors felt like when a German U-Boat just send a torpedo their way!!

I hope to catch Muskie for the first time in June and with that being the only fresh water fish that lives in Maine that I haven't caught. Right now I would have to say SM Bass. I have been told muskie fight the hardest and most violent of all fresh water fish. I can't wait to find out in June. Just my opinion but what do I know Laughing Out Loud
