I know a lot of you guys are from eastern Canada so I'd like throw this question out there. I've never fished the Maritimes for salmon before and might like to give it a try. Been a couple times to visit relatives in PEI and NS on a vacation trip so I know the area a little bit. PEI didn't seem like it had a lot of fishing opportunities. Cape Breton stood out as one of the most beautiful spots I've ever been to. How is the fishing there? When is the best time(anywhere)? What's involved in getting licensees and do you need to hire a guide? Don't mind doing so just want to know if I have too. Bombers, swinging streamers, what works the best?

Hi Paul

Here is my take on fishing in New Brunswick. I have fished there for about 5 years (1999-2003) mostly in the spring but did one trip for two days in the fall of 2002. The fishing is great and people are nicer. In NB you need a guide. Spring fishing is a blast and you do hook up alot, but these are Black (spring) salmon that have wintered over in the river and are now moving back to the ocean and feeding like gang busters. Big streames are the ticket, I used Lefty Decievers the first few years and had great success. Check out "Upper Oxbow Outdoor Adventures" there is a link on my links page, good people. But I would think you might get an invite from some of the members here on this site if you ask. Well worth the time and effort if you ask me.

Lee

P.S. Have you checked out the photo's of my fishing on the Miramichi.

Ya the guide thing for NB kinda sucks (unless your a guide) if your not a resident of NB and that applies if your Canadian as well and not living in NB. I was always good as I own property and was born here and qualified as a resident, even when I lived in NS or Ont. However the guide rule only applies in certain waters where atlantic salmon is the primary species angler for. Cape Breton, I've heard good things about the fishing there, however I've never had the opportunity to fish there. I believe that you can fish for sea run atlantic salmon there with no guide as a nonresident. The trout fishing is pretty good there as well. My buddy used to camp out at some place north of the park and they had really good trout fishing for pan sized brookies, not large ones. I think that there are sea run trout in the Margaree as well. Since Lee's vouching for you I could see my way clear to take you out in my boat for a day on the SJR (Muskie), South (spring-trout) or North Oromocto Lakes or Mag Lake (spring-LLS and bass). I'm no expert on the Miramichi so I'll leave that up to others. However as with most places spring fishing is best and summer fishing can be on again off again. Just so you not thinking that NB is like Labrador or anything.
