Guys

Here is the link to the Bangor News story about Grand Lake Stream Hatchery being on the chopping block!

Bangor News

I'm not even a Mainer and I'm kinda pissed. Canadian Govt pulled the same trick in the 90's and the hatcheries that survived were ones that had a strong community group to raise funds and support them. What's the latest news Lee from south of the border?

Bill, I would think anyone who fishes for LL Salmon in Maine would be screaming, according to the article 80% of stocked LL come from that hatchery.

I found this while looking for a cabin to rent this spring at GLS.

Grand Lake Lodging in Maine

The yellow line at the top of their home page picture is the link to another story as well. Yes as I understand it that hatchery has been running for over 100 years and is critical to the LLS fishery in Maine.

Thanks for the update Bill . I wish the common folk had more imput when it comes to things like this. Put the dang thing to a vote across the state then live with that vote. I am just upset about letting developer' building condo's around the Moosehead and Rapid River Area. Some places need to be left alone. Going to spoil everything about the place. Mad Dave V

Bill, did you end up staying in those cabins, and if so, how were they?

I was planning on renting one this spring, I think that I've got my brother in law and a few other guys talked into a weekend trip to GLS. It's only about 2.5 hours from here. I've been looking at Canalside Cabins and Grand Lake Lodge cabins. Both are $42.00 per person per night, very reasonable rates and frankly the condition of the cabins is a minor concern as I don't plan to be in them much, only to sleep. We've got some pretty rustic cabins here in NB on some of the Crown Reserves. Where you have to eat fast lest the mice and red squirrels get to the food first. Once when I was speaking to a gentleman who was staying at Loggie Lodge, I was complaining about how aggressive the squirrels were and he said that he'd take squirrels any day as his cabin had bats. Oh but it's just pure entertainment when the waters high and the salmon aren't taking and the boys get bored and start chasing mice or trying to whack a bat out of mid air with a broom. Hint, you can swing at a bat from the front all day and their echo location is alot faster that human reflexes, the trick is to come up from behind with the broom.

Tried to find info on FFinMaine but could not find the thread on the forum. It's a dam shame that this may happen, I don't think much of Buldachi as our governor, he has more high payed help then he needs, that is where the cuts should come from.

Thanks for bringing this up Bill.

Bill, I stayed in Canalside about 15 years ago not the same owners as now. Nice enough place. Like you the only time spent in cabin was eating, tying up some flies and sleeping. I haven't been back but it would be a shame to lose that hatchery. You'd like to think that the politicians would have more brains and do the right thing but that's why they are politicians.

LOL , money runs deep into thier pockets once they are elected, changes how they once thought before they took office. Thats why its up to us to stop this proposal in its tracks. Get a partition going. Get the fishing clubs involved. Get the word out on how important this hatchery is to the economy of Maine in the long run, Tell them how important it is for the fisherman Give them something to think about other then a one sided opinion, Dave V
