Just got back from an epic road trip to Venice Louisiana to fish with some friends, and boy are my arms tired.

We met our guide and captain at 5am and headed down the Mississippi in his 42' Freeman with quad 300's, so we were in the Gulf in no time.  First stop, the flats to pick up some pogies and herring the off to the oil rigs in search of tuna.  The tuna were quit active and putting on quite the show.  We hooked up in no time, a nice 45lbs yellow fin followed by another 45lbs big eye, I soon added a 45 lbs Jack tuna to the mix.  We went on like this for a while until we finally hooked.a decent fish, an hour later we had an 85lbs yellow fin on board.   

By this time the tuna had gone deep so we motored out to the deep reefs for some red snapper action.  We were fishing in 380' of water with sharks patrolling about 80-100' down, so you had to reel fast to keep you fish.  We proceeded to bring in 12 snapper all in the 30-40lbs range, not including the several half fish we managed to land.  

I would be remiss if I did not mention the 10' tiger shark that I managed to catch twice, both times on a top water plug and light tackle, 30-40 minute fight each time.

Our last foray was to try for a swordfish, fishing a large squid in 1800' of water we managed a brief hook up but lost him on his first sound, still very exciting though.

I am looking forward to my next trip, hopefully with a heavy fly rod to challenge the tuna with.
