Jay and I tried to beat the heat today . So we headed in the Black Hills to a walk in area on Castle Creek . A stream that comes out of Deerfield lake . The water is much cooler then most of the streams in the hills thats why there is a self sustaining wild brook trout population. Most folk stop about 1 a mile or less into the walk in but Jay and i went the extra mile sweating our tails off. When we made it to the upper stretch Jay stopped at a hole he likes to fish and I continued closer to the outlet . The closer I got the cooler the air got. I put on a CDC Trude i came up with last year . This fly has become one of my favs . My first cast fooled a nice 8 inch wild Brookie to the net. After landing 4 fish and missing a couple I sat down for a sip of ice cold water i brought in . I also feasted on some wild red raspberries . Then I snuck down to the streams edge on my knees . The water there is gin clear . The skies were blue not a cloud to be seen . So stealth is a must or you send brookies in every direction . I managed a couple more nice Brookies and decided to leave the pool and let these fish rest. I walked back down to where Jay was fishing . He had success as well. Landing a Brown and 3 Brookies . He told me he had several short strikes . A common thyme on that water . The sun was bearing down on us and we decided to call it a day. We walked out sweating the rest of our tails off. By the time we made it to the truck i think the both of us lost a couple pounds. Thank God for A/C . We stopped on the way home at a new burger joint in the little town of Hill City . The burgers were delicious and hit the spot. Did I tell you we like A/C . After arriving home i took a nice cool shower and quick nap. All in all a good day . Tomorrow will be bringing a cool 97 to the Hills . I took the day off so I might get up early and try the Trico hatch for a couple hours .
Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was
cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time.
On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words,
and some of the words are theirs.
