My cousin flew in from Seattle, and we fished the White Mtn area from June 1-5. Rivers fished: Ellis, Saco, Swift, Bearcamp, Ammonusic, and Mad River (near Waterville) on the way home. No fish even seen or hinted at anywhere except one afternoon on the Ammonusic near Littleton. The two of us caught and released  6 fish (Rainbows and Brookies) in the 9-10" range on Tue afternoon. Nothing before and nothing after. Most of the time we fished a caddis or mayfly on top with a nymph 20" below. Tried wooly buggers, hornberg streamers, muddler minnows...none of those got any action. Fished the spinner section of the Saco on Sunday and Monday nites til dark...lots of mayflies and caddis. No spinners. NO - absolutely none - fish feeding on top. Saw lots of mayflies and caddis hatching, but never saw a fish go after one.

Can't figure it out. Water levels perfect, water temps 56-60 degrees, sunny days, cloudy days, nada. No one we saw during the week had any better luck than us. What happened???

Well thats a bum deal. I wonder if everyone is having the same issues ?  The fish could be hitting emergers a foot or so below the surface . That being a guess because I wasnt there to fish it . Better luck next time . Myself havent fished in a couple weeks out here in the Dakotas . Thunderstorm after Thunderstom followed by rain has the streams blown out .

The water may be 56-60 on the surface, but on the bottom they are still a lethargic 45-50 at best.  In my experiece, in a normal year things don't begin to start to heat up in the white mountains until mid june.  And this year its been cold, lots of snowpack makes for some cold cold water.  On the other hand, the lakes region waters have been fishing great, and will continue for some time with the current weather.  I don't even plan on going up to the whites until early july this year.
