Lee I am here been real busy with family showing wife the sites. I am trying to jugle my schedule do we can hook up. Will call you soon if you need to call me I will have phone with me on and off Dave V
So Mark and Infinally made it out to Spoonwood on July 5th. With this ungodly heat (that we are blaming on Dave) we decideded to head out just after sun up, it's a good 30 min paddle across Nubinuset to the portage. Well true to all my experience the wind was whipping up the water, even forming the occasional whitecap. I wiggled into one of Mark's kayaks and he and Kirk set off in the canoe behind me. About 40 min later we made the portage and the wind in Spoonwood was not much better. We decided to press on to the othe side to try fishing in the lee of the hills. On the way over I decided to troll a large nymph, and sure enough once I was in the worst spot (read wind blowing in to rocks) I get a hit. Nothing to write home about just an average smallmouth.
The rest of the time didn't produce much better just mostly small smallmouths in the 1 pound range. However as we made our way back to Nubanusit I managed to hook up on something that quickly got my attention. As usual I was using my 3wt rod and whatever I had on the line was not going to give way easily Mark and Kirk were quite some way off and I quickly yelled for their assistance because I didn't think ther was anyway I was going to get this fish into the boat myself. After a very tiring fight I did manage to land about a 3 pound largemouth bass on my 3wt, with 7x tippet I was quite impressed.
At this point the sun was getting high in the sky and the temperature was warming up quickly so we decided to Fish our Way back to Nubanusit and back to the boat ramp. I did manage to find one really nice spot in Nubanusit where I managed to pick up lots of good one to one and a half pound smallmouth bass one after another.
So despite not finding any trout that day I guess it was still a good day; I managed to get lots of bass and one really nice big bass, One that certainly fought just as hard if not harder than any trout I have ever taken on a flyrod.
Oh and sorry for no pictures but both Mark and I forgot our cameras maybe next time
