Shaun ànd I met up for a quick morning of fishing in the Franconia Woodstock area.  I got there a bit ahead of Shaun and the fish in Profile lake were boiling everywhere.  I launched in my float tube and rigged with a dry/dropper combo.  The fish were taking drys but barely sipping the, timing was key.  After several hits and misses I landed the first of about a dozen trout, all average stockies like this little guy.

Shaun was wading the shore and despite having a few hits was not able to put any in the net.  We moved south to try a spot that we had some luck in last year.  This spot proved to be pretty barren, so I moved upstream and got into a deep pool loaded with some fat rainbows.  These fish were almost black and were quite solid.  I managed four and Shaun one, so it was a good day we got some fresh air and our hands smelled like fish.

 Nice report Keith

I took the liberty to edit the page and make the photo's show in a lightbox.  Much nicer that way.  What were the dates you fished up there??

See Yah
Thanks
Lee

Thanks Lee, this was my first post with my new IPad so I took the simplest route.

i think Shaun and I were there on June 21st

I have never seen bows that color before, and they were very solid, my guess is they were hold overs.

I caught one like that last year in the Merry Meeting.  It was a solid fish and what a beauty!

I have no idea what makes them that way.  Whether it is genetics or where they have spent most of their lives.  I figured it was a fish that came up river from the depths of Lake Winnipesauki and that was why, but your fish rules out that idea.

I'm wondering if maybe they are native born?

Has anyone else encountered these dark, very solid bows?

 Keith and Theron

Was the water very dark that you caught those fish in??  If so it may just be environment, in crystal clear water the fish are light colored and in dark water they are dark.

Just my idea.

See Yah

I caught these in the Pemin in the white mountains, above the confluence with the east branch, the water doese not get much clearer.  That's what was throwing me off, I would expect darker water to produce darker fish but this was a complete mystery.

the longer they are in the more they become dark , I caught a bunch of wild bows this year in the moose they were dark but had brilliant white fins perfectly clean too they were sweet largest was about 14" could be wild but my guess holdovers .

Nice post good to see you guy's back. From my experience with our hatchery in SD I have seen Rainbows very dark in color swimming with normal lighter fish. My guess it is genetics. I have also seen fish from the Fry Pan with a brilliant red stripe down their side . These fish are also darker in color but not quite as dark as your fish. The Fry Pan get their color from the abundance of a type of freshwater shrimp . Your fish have a tanic color to them . Almost like some of the lakes in Maine. Sense you caught these fish in a high mountain stream I doubt its that . My guess it's genetics or what these fish are eating on the bottom. Interesting might be worth a call to the fish and wildlife folks . It could be a different strain of fish .

Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was
cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time.
On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words,
and some of the words are theirs.

Good idea Dave, I think I will bring my iPad with me to the show in a couple of weeks and show the pictures to some of the biologists.
