MAINE - Life in the Slow Lane
From what I've seen it's been light here as well. One day I saw about 8 midge hatches with a small but impressive mayfly hatch in between. I spent about 8hrs on the water on Thursday and did not see a single hatch, this on a pond that always has BWO's on the water this time of year. I have taken about a dozen fish on dries however, alway my favorite.
I did observe some strange trout behaviour that I have never seen before. The trout were in about 8-12 feet of water nosing into the muck on the bottom and flipping around. Almost looked like bass when they are making a nest. There would be groups of 3 or more fish all doing this then they would take off ...anyone ever seen this or have any idea what they were up to?
They are Scud fishing Keith. They will nose in flip around shake all over kicking up scuds and nymphs. I have been seeing the same thing here as well. Especially the bigger fish. Tie up some scud Keith .
Grrrrrr.... I tossed everything at them but scuds! I have a ton of really ugly looking scuds that I tied up this winter, I bet they would have done the trick nicely.

Get your weight close to the bottom . Let the scud come up off the bottom a few inches . Seams to be working out here .
Just wanted to know what the hatches are like out your way. Here in the Dakotas the hatches have been light. I have come across a few small black stones .. There was a little hatch of PMD's Lots of midge's still. Haven't seen any Caddis as of yet. I plan on going out tonight to scope out the lakes and ponds to see what might be happing in there . Just wanted to touch bases with you all
