   What are thr reccomendations for backing for a fly line..

..i have to buy backing for the Grandson's new rod and reel/

Depends on the wt line and size of the reel.

I generally go with a 20# braided dacron and about 75-80% of the recomended amount for the reel (the manufactures always over estimate their capacity)

 

As for brands, cortland makes a real good backing, by far the easiest to make a blind splice in.
