Went fishing for wild Browns early Sat morning to around noon. My friend Jay and I wanted to try a new section of stream close to home.A stretch of stream right dead center of Rapid City . Before I go into that let me tell you that our weatherman is a frigging liar. The man is on my shit list .  He informed us the night before we were looking at light flurries early them warming up to 50 . Well it started out cool around 40 then went to shit shortly after. Flurries my behind. Snowflakes the size of silver dollars fell from the sky and the temps dropped to 30 . These snowflakes had to be the largest I have seen sense I left Loring Maine during an April snowstorm.  I had to say it was rather beautiful although not expected. None of us did. I think we got around 8 inches of the fluffy much needed wet snow.

OK now back to the fishing. After Jay and I got to the parking lot in the middle of town we both geared up and talked about the weather and how our first day fly fishing together for the first time sense last fall was starting out on the wrong foot. I told Jay that I really don't mind the big flakes because last time I fished a snow storm with huge flakes like these I had a very successful day. After all we were told by the local weather man that is was only temporary Lol, No.   We walked to the stream with his new rod in hand . A 3wt he built over the winter and was eager to show me and give it a whirl on some wild Brown Trout . When we got to the waters eager the fish were rising just to the surface not breaking it . I made the suggestion we use emerges. I put on my old reliable CDC emerges Jay tied on an emerges that he had concocted earlier in the year. He walked a bit up stream and I stayed at the pool. After a few cast I hooked and land a nice little brown about 6 inches wonderful color. While fishing the pool I had the thought to head up stream to a section I had often over looked . Mainly because it was dead in the Middle of Rapid City.

So off I went hiking up stream .  I passed Jay on the way . I stopped to ask how he was doing he showed me a picture he had taken on his phone, Did I tell you we both left our cameras at home ? Embarrased But at least he could take a nice photo with his phone .

Not a bad Brown on his new hand crafted rod. His reel is a $600.00 cabala's wanted to unload . He got it for a great buy at $200.00 bucks. Some guy's have all the luck .

Well I admired his photo and congratulated him and started on my quest to head to uncharted waters for me anyway. I had to laugh to myself as I got closer to the center of Rapid"s busy section of the city I could smell fresh doughnuts being made up at the bakery and that was soon followed up by the aroma of McDonald's. I have to tell you I was starting to get a bit hungry . As I got closer to my destination I could see traffic going by over the bridge and a few joggers well a heck of a lot of joggers. It then dawned on me that it was The Saint Patty race that was in front of me. I could see that stream access was obstructed by tons of cattails and had my work cut out for me . After trudging through a forest of the stream side weeds I made it to the waters edge. To my surprise I had stumbled upon a nice stretch of water . A split in the stream and a nice long deep pool. Best part the water looked like it was boiling .  I quickly got my rod ready and made a cast the fly hit the water and was taken immediately. A nice little colorful hard fighting 8 inch Brown Trout. A great start . I landed and let the little guy slip back into the water. I made another soft cast and again in no time at all I hook landed and released another nice Brown Trout . I was having a blast . I lost track on how many fish I caught in this pool. Over 20 for sure. Then I went a bit further upstream under a bridge. There were some bigger fish moving though the water and I think I had spooked them . I did manage to land a couple fish but the bigger fish were wise to me . I went a bit further up stream and the smell Of Mickey D's was really working at my hunger spell .  Besides I was starting to get cold and the snow was really coming down. A breeze was building and I decided to head back and hook up with Jay. As I got closier to him he yelled out are you hungry ? He had been reading my mind. We loaded up our gear . Went to a bagel shop. We both chowed down a egg baccon and cheese bagel . Yum Yum. After we got warmed up we talked about our day. Jay had landed several fish as well. We had wanted to go back for more fun on the water but Mother Nature was throwing us for a loop . We though it best to pack up had home and build a fire in the woodstove and tie up flies. All in all it was a great day even though the weather man out right lied to us. Sorry to be so long winded but I hope you enjoyed the story . Dave V

Nice Dave.  I may have to borrow that handle design for my bamboo rod I am building.

Jay said he turned it that way so he could get a better feel on the blank. with his thumb. He will be joining the site soon. He plans on building a boo from a blank he purchased . Can't wait to see what he comes up with .

Tell him to start a boo build thread, I will be starting mine soon, just waiting on a couple parts to get started.

Will do .  Great idea Keith . Looking forward to seeing how your boo comes along . It sounds like this could be very addicting
