I have spent most of the fall fishing one of my favorite, and most challenging rivers that I frequent. The river has a year round population of average sized brookies, but during the fall its filled with salmon, and some of them are huge. A few weeks ago I was walking down the ridge to the river and spotted about 10 or 15 salmon in one pool, then close to 30 in another, larger pool. I would swear some of them were over 2 feet. My first day on the river, once the salmon arrived, I had 2 chases and one short follow. The next day I had close to 30 rolls, chases and slashes, broke one fish off as it hit my muddler on the surface and came clean out of the water. Another day just a few solid chases with no hook ups. I was there last week after work and hooked a massive fish, the largest fish I have ever had on the line. Jumped once, hit the water with a thud, then came up again and tail walked across the pool where it threw my hook. I was there again yesterday, lost one nice fish swinging a wet fly in the morning. I fished up river later that morning and rolled a fish, then had a slight bump, then a good chase then finally a hook up, but only for a second. I then fished to one I saw jump, nothing, no interest at all. Then hooked up again with what I think was the same fish, but lost it again. I haven’t landed a salmon here this year, just cant seem to keep them on the line. Man do I love the fall, these fish are tough, but I find the challenge helpful in learning new tactics and refining my techniques. Now the crowds are thick with other anglers so I find myself bushwhacking to find new, empty stretches. I only have a week left, I will get one, if only one, and it will be well earned.

Thanks for the report Peter . Nice photo's .

Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was
cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time.
On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words,
and some of the words are theirs.

Salmon love to toss them hooks.

I run into the same issue fishing Sebago in the spring, I find setting the hook a second time and keeping the line perpendicular to the fight angle helps alot.

Nice report and pictures by the way, do you mind me asking what river?  That first picture looks a lot like a spot my Dad used to take me to as a kid.

Not at all where i thought it was, but I know the spot you are talking about.  I was just there on Thurday last.

I must say those Sebago salmon are willey creatures, I hooked three in the hour I was there and only managed to net one.

Then again all my hooks are barbless now so I expect a slightly higher loss rate,

FYI - The spot that drains Sebago is also pretty good right now. (try the big bend pool)

I will have to try down there, I have never caught a fish down there, but I usually only fish it when everything else is cosed, so I might go down there after the 15th. I will be up above the lake Saturday and Monday, if your in the area let me know if you want to fish. I also fish with barbless hooks, but I usually dont loose fish like this.
