Hello all,

After reading through the articles here on the main page, I'm trying to research some options for fishing either the Wildcat Brook or Rocky Branch.  I've been dying to do more freshwater fishing after a recent trip to the Nezinscot in Maine.

Ideally, I'd like to find a safe spot to leave my car, fish/hike for a day and spend the night camping in the woods (not at a campground).  I'm assuming that since both rivers are within the White Mountain National Forest that backcountry camping is allowed, provided the WMNF rules are followed.

First question is on Rocky Branch - I just discovered that a portion of the Rocky Branch trail and I believe the trailhead at the end of Jericho Road has been closed due to Hurricane Irene last fall.  Does anyone know if the trailhead/parking area is still open?

This question would apply to both rivers - Any idea how far north/upstream remains fishable at this time of year?  I'm assuming again that these are small mountain streams and at some point they become basically unfishable due to lack of water this time of year.

For example, if you come into the Rocky Branch from the RB Trail off Rt. 16 (near Engine Hill/Mt. Isolation) would that stretch of river be decent fishing?

Similar question for the Wildcat - I understand that there is a trailhead for Black Mountain Ski trail near Melloon Road (which I have read is a productive section of the Wildcat) - Does anyone know if there is overnight parking allowed at that trailhead and if that area of the Wildcat is fishable this time of year?

Appreciate any info - thanks,

-- Tom

Tom

Sorry for the late reply.  Your best bet is to stop at the ranger station at the east end of the Kank.  Ask about camping in those areas.  As far as thr Rocky Branch is concerned you can park at the gate and walk up the Forest Service road as far as you want.  That river should fish good anywhere along that stretch.  For the Wildcat ask about over night parking at that trail head, I am not sure what the rules are at that parking area.  The Wildcat will fish good no matter how far up the river you go.  But the stretch from the bridge on Meloon Road up river is just great.  The river begins to drift away from the Carter Notch road the further  you go up, so it could be a long bushwack back out.

Hope this helps and if you go we need pictures and a report.

See Yah
Thanks
Lee

Lee,

Thanks for the advice - I'll definitely check things out with the Ranger Station that is a great idea, didn't know it was even there.

Hoping to get up there sometime in the next couple of weeks and will definitely be bringing the camera Smile
