When tying up my comparaduns, I realized that aside from a couple packs of ice dubbing I bought in the last year, the bulk of my dubbing is synthetic poly, which is fine for some applications, but my comparaduns I feel were lacking with out the hairy buggy looking bodies that real hair provide.

What sort of dubbing would you all recommend for this sort of application?  I was thinking of buying an assorted box of rabbit hair dubbing in different colors.  Any thoughts?

I use a superfine dubbing . If you use rabbit underfur then make sure you use a floatant.  The underfur will absorb water so  a couple drops on the tying thread body before you apply the fur works best.   I think I going to tie some up and try the scotch gaurd thing . My 2cents on tying the comparadun

Good point Dave!  Would there be an advantage to using muskrat or somthing like that?  I mean since they are semi-aquatic mammals, would their fur absorb less water?

What sort of fur dubbign would be best for dries?

I would think Muskrat  would be a very effective substitute for rabbit under fur Theron.

I like the sythetic stuff myself.  If you want it to be fuzzier then just get a dubbing brush and fluf it up a bit when you are done.

If you must go with fur dub then the muskrat and beaver are somewhat water resistant.

 Thanks Keith!

I'll give the brushing a shot and will bear in mind the materials you mentioned if it still doesn't seem quite right to me.

I'm not much of a compardun user and would like to learn more about tying them and fishing them.  I generally use an assortment of antron type dubbing.  I typically will use the muskrat or fox fur on the traditional Adams and Hendricksons.  I find the muskrat dubbs quite nicely.  To make things look buggier, I often snip a few of the guard hairs from the hares mask and just lay it on top of the dubbed thread without twisting it around anymore.  Then I might pick out some of the hair after winding it on the hook depending on how buggy it looks.

If you want them really buggy looking, you can also have your six year old tie a few.
