Hey!

Hello my name is Matt Mitchell I am 16 years old and I live in New Hampshire. I am a beginning fly fishing angler and am  trying to learn the ropes! I love hockey, fishing, and hunting. I picked up the fly rod last year and caught a trout or two but this year i am trying to make the switch so that fly fishing is my priamry mode of fishing. I am entranced in the sport, in the last week i would say i have been fishing 6 out of the 7 days. Although i only had one small pickeral to show for it.... I am still trying and love any new information i can get. I want to join the forum becasue i want to learn as much as possible about this amazing sport, catch a few fish here and there, and be apart of what seems like an amazing online fly fishing community!

Thanks

-Matt

Hey Matt welcome to Lee's site. Glad to have ya. You say you like hockey. Well I do to. Go Maine Black Bears , Rapid City Rush and Boston Bruins !!!!!!!.   Starting with a fly rod at 16 you got the jump on me there. I didn't get started until my early 20's . It is awesome sport for sure. Best part fly fishing takes you to all the best places and brings you across some mighty fine folks. We have folks from all walks of life here and from across all of North America . They are a great bunch of men that will make you feel welcome and give it their best to show and help you along the way. There are beginning fly tiers all the way up to professional tiers if your into that. Some just starting on the fly fishing adventure to folks that have 40 or 50 years under their belt. I just got my first Bamboo Rod so a brand new adventure for me. Well again welcome to Matt  jump right in and tell us more about your fly fishing adventures. Dave V

Matt,

Congrats on finding yourself in the most amazing angling experience I could find at least.  WE are always here and glad to help.  Everything from fly fishing to to ice fishing and even some hunting is now duscussed here.

Its a good group and we all lov to help.  So feel free to ask anything!!!  We'll do the best we can to answer you.  Maybe even find some time to get out with you as fly fishing isn't one of the easiest things to learn about with out the visual components.

Good luck can't wait to learn more about you and your angling experiences.

Welcome Matt,

Though I am new here myself I can tell you this is a great group of guys that are willing to share their knowledge and are very welcoming.   Like you I picked up a flyrod in earnest last year (played with them a bit years ago and did some trolling previously).  Last year I caught a fair amount of trout, mostly very hungry bookies caught in a small pool (like fishing at the hatchery almost).  After hooking up with Ziggy this past weekend I am feeling much more confident in my skills (if you can call them that).   I highly recommend asking a lot of questions and trying to find time to get together with some of the more experienced folks for time on the water.  There really is no better teacher then experience.

Also if you are not currently tying your own flies I would at least consider it.  There is nothing better than hauling in trout that were duped by one of your own creations.  I also find it very relaxing and enjoyable.  You can just follow someone else's patterns or do a ton of research and make up your own pattern base on local variations in the insect life.

The other piece of advice that I do not recall seeing here that helped me last year is: when the trout fishing slows down, head out to the ponds and fish for panfish and bass.  It really helps with your presentation skills for dry flies and they are not nearly as picky as trout.  Hooking a good size small mouth with a light flyrod will really work on your landing skills as well.

Again welcome and jump on in,

-Keith

Hey Matt. I am new here too and everyone seems very nice. I do believe that everyone will help you gain the knoledge you are looking for. Like Keith said, experience is the big key. Watch other guys and how they do it and figure out what works best for you. I am sure there are times I look like a fool ( especially when I go for the unexpected swim) but I enjoy it. The fishing not the swimming. It is quite a thrill when you hook one! Keith and I will keep an eye out for you and I am sure you could join us on an excursion. I'm not sure what I can teach you but you are welcome to come wet a fly with us.
