Hi Lahave
Have tied thousands of doubles over the years. Also I never fished singles for years.. Started using singles after I started fishing the
Miramichi regularly.. Still have to keep a few hundred doubles tied
ahead for the local lads who fish the Restigouche. And still have maybe
a dozen doubles in my fly boxes. I still have a few thousand bare double hooks....But when they are gone, I won't be getting any more.
AND the green machine and white bomber were the flies for this
weekend on the lsw miramichi..My chum and I each got a grilse on Friday and aqain on Saturday...But no sign of a fish this morning.

Stephen

Right on Stephen I have had 3-4 boxes of double hooks in my fly tying gear for years but never tied many. I have never fished with doubles and rarely have seen anyone fish with them. I guess they may work well in deeper rivers??

Hi Lahave
I have found that doubles will catch fish on the Miramichi and
also I have taken some nice trout from lakes with a slow retrieve
using double red Abbys or black dose..
There has always been some controversy as to the hooking
power of doubles vs singles..I can understand the point they bring
up about hooking a fish on one barb of a double and depending
upon which side of the jaw the fish is hooked on,,then the other
barb could act as a lever to force the other barb out...There are
too many variables to consider for me..Like which side of the pool
were you standing...Did the fish take the fly turning right or left..
Did he take coming upstream or headed downstream.

They do give your flies a slightly different look when tied I think...wider and flatter that singles. I think I will stick to the singles...LOL

I have used double hooks with streamers but mainly for trolling. I use single hooks when I flyfish streams. Makes it a little easier to cast I guess.

Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was
cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time.
On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words,
and some of the words are theirs.

Dave
Someone else told me the same thing that they are hard to cast without getting all snagged up in your line. I don't need any more to worry about with my casting as poor as it is already..... Mr. Green
