T_Bone,

I think the copper johns look great.  I tend to use Hungarian Partridge for the legs.  I'll have to try what you did with the BIots.  I agree with the group though, natural insects are active in the water and if yours spinds and flips, a better imitation.  If you can find some partridge, it's not too expenisive (I don't buy the full cape, just a bag of the feathers) I would get some.  The stuff is addicting!  It's very soft and in my opinion works great for legs on many flies, not just a copper john.  It also works great for simple soft hackle flies.  Anyway, this winter when we get together tying  I can show you a bunch.  I've got so many supplies I could share as well.

Check out this link, I think your copper johns look awesome, but this is how I learned.  I'm not sure if you've seen this site, but I pretty much taught myself how to tie flies from Fly Anglers Online!

Fly Anglers Online

I think I have that material already.  I puchased a massive quantity of tying materials in the beginning, I have recieved a lot from new friends, and I purchased my fair share too.  So I have a lot of materials at this point.  SOme I don't even recognize, or know what to do with.  Still learning I guess.

The link was very helpful, and I will try that method in the near future.  I just don't know if I have a darker backing for the back.  I have just been using like 6 strips of flashabou and dabbing it with glue when I am done.

Thanks for the feedback.  I look foward to testing my work on trout.  Especially since I stil haven't caught a lot oof them.

Lee's going to help me with that this weekend.

Thanks,

Theron

 Lee,

Thanks!  I was not aware, I got it half right though, thats a start!  Thanks a bunch for adding that into the links page!  It really is an extremely valuable resource.  Vidoes are nice, but I'm more of a book person, and the format of that site wiht all the pictures is a huge help!  It wasn't however able to teach me how to spin deer hair Crazy

-Nic

I stated playing with spinning hair inthe beginning.  Granted my attempts came out far from ideal, but I did manage to tie it on.  I also learned a lot about pushing it into place with your fingers and compressing it on the hook shank.  So apparently I did quite well, because I did get deer hair all over the coffee table, but I got several flies I called Bass plugs out of the deal.

They even make the popper like noise when stripped short and quick.  I was very impressed with this!  I didn't manage to catch any fish with it htat night but then again my brother couldn't even get one with worms and it was getting dark.  So the fact that I casted it it performed as anticipated, and hed together made it a success for me.

 T_Bone,

The one thing I've learned with tying is to substitute when you can.  I get lazy alot of times.  Frequently I do the same as you, I only use crystal flash for the wing case on lots of nymphs.  The time I see a trout look at my fly and say, "What the...you didn't carefully pull one strand of crystal flash over a black wing case and carefully epoxy with two part epoxy..."  Well I guess if that happens I'll just quit tying.  Use what you have and I guarantee it will catch fish.  But I do LOVE soft hackle of any sort.  But that is me, it's my go to, I'm confident in it.  I really think many times you could be casting a rock super glued to a hook and if you had confidence in the fly, you would catch fish.  It's kind of like going up to that girl thats way out of you league and asking her to go out saturday night...if you're not confident you've got no game Big Grin  For some reason it's like the trout can sense it.  I don't match the hatch, I fish the same flies over and over.  9 times out of 10 you'll see a prince on my line.  Often with a dropper flie of a copper john or pheasant tail.

Really  it's all about fun!  good luck this weekend.  I'll be on the Mascoma Friday hoping to catch a bigger brown than Ziggy, probably will end up being this...Boot Fishing  We do have to meet up before the season ends.  I've got vacation October 8-15th.  If you or anyone here for that matter wants to meet up I plan to fish all week long!

Laughing Out LoudVery funny analogy!  I have caught that sort of impression from others as well.  Confidence and pride win out I guess.

I will keep you in mind during that time frame.  I'll see if I can sneak away.  Good luck outfishing Brandon.  I can't do it.

Go ahead guys, keep it up.  I'll be springing for that new Renzetti. It's gonna be a loooooong Winter according to the Old Farmers Almanac with Feb being brutal cold.

About those copper johns. They have worked the cat's meow for me when fished as a nymph. But I've really had some vicious strikes and hook ups when fishing them as an emerger.  When it comes in sight on a retrieve I'll skate it up against the current just below the surface so it makes a wake.  The trout must figure it's going to sprout wings and get away because they come in 300 miles an hour and slam it!

As far as that spun deer hair, NO! I ain't doin it.  No need to really. I can build bulk on a trolling fly with much easier materials to manage and one of the keys on an effective trolling fly is water absorption.

Charlie used to tell me to tie em sparse. I don't cotton up to that idea when you are targeting bigger trout, salmon, and especially lake trout. Anorexics Twiggy flies don't get em excited, double whoppers do Mr. Green
