That fish you have in your hands in your avatar, how good a fight was that, and how much do you think that fish weighed?? How long was that fish, best quess?? I will admit that each fish you catch can fight different, I have had small fish just run me ragid and some big fish just be dogs. So maybe this is a moot point as to which fish fights the best. I think what Dave said is very true, the next fish that takes your fly might be the best.
My 2 cents.

I didn't measure or weigh that fish just a quick pic and back in the water. He did fight hard, made several runs into my backing and a couple of leaps, always a thrill.
I have not fished for steelies yet, but I think Smallies or Largemouths are the best, hardest hitting fish here in Maine. When I moved to Maine, I had never fished for smallies with a fly rod. I hate to say it but I've been a trout snob for along time. Bass fishing was for Southern rednecks with a long neck Budweiser in one hand and a spinning rod/reel in the other.
I first fished for smallies a few years ago on the Penobscot. What a blast!!! They are awesome and hit like pitbulls. There isn't many more things as exciting as watching a bass smash into a surface popper. They are magnificent!!
